Opportunity description

The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) aims to reach artists from around the world who play an active part in the field of contemporary art. Artist who will allow the institute to notice the delicate movements of change, and are ready to move hearts and minds with their prosperous proposals. The residency program also aims to help the audience gain a deeper understanding of art and promote international exchange.

The residency program will take place in the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre galleries and site in Japan, starting off 6 September until 14 December. The residency period will include an exhibition and various exchange programs, and full contribution to the creative life through creative activities, workshops, and lectures which will be held by the artist. The program will support the artist to create his work, and use the program as a tool with which to educate the local audience about art.

Eligibility criteria:

[1] The artist should be working in the field of contemporary art.

[2] The artist should be independent, and capable of working and living on his own.

[3] The artist should be able to produce and present artwork and to handle the dismantling and removal of that artwork by himself within the designated period of time.

[4] The artist should understand the purpose of his visit to ACAC, and be able to be present for more than 55 days of the residency period.

[5] The artist should be able to lead a community life with the other artists on the program.

[6] The artist should be able to communicate with local people, including joining in the exchange program activities, (talks, lectures, workshops, school visits etc) and should be prepared to take an active role in the educational art program.

[7] The artist should be able to explain his or her artwork, and to give lectures or workshops in English or Japanese as part of the exchange program.

[8] The artist should be in good health.

[9] The artist should be able to speak and understand basic English daily conversation.

The organizer will provide the following expenses and benifits:

[1] One round trip for the overseas residents.

[2] 250,000JPY for production expenses, which includes fees for material, employment, research, transportation, display and putting away of exhibition. (as long as the organizer accepts their necessity)

[3] 75,000JPY as an expense for the art exchange program.

[4] A studio in the Creative Hall and with display space in the Exhibition Hall in ACAC during the program period only, in which he will share with other artists.

[5]  Living expenses of 303,160JPY which will be provided as long as the artist stays in Aomori and arrives and leaves on time.

[6]  A residential facility in ACAC during the program period, which includes a private single room, a bathroom and a kitchen which he will share with other artists.

[7]  Wireless internet in the dining room, and wire-line internet in each room.

[8]  Injury insurance and sickness insurance for the duration of the residency. Any past illness, chronic diseases and dental treatment are not covered.

[9] The Organizer will help the artists with the recording and copyrights, and produce an Exhibition Catalog and present 20 copies of the catalog to the artist.
