Opportunity description
The Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission invites applications from artists working at the intersection between art and the sciences interested in taking part in the Summer School leading to the 2019 Resonances III Festival in Ispra, Italy. The festival aims to spread awareness and stimulate new thinking at the border between science, art and society through the production of correlated works by artists, nurtured by the dialogues with scientists. Therefore, the JRC established the SciArt project to activate rapprochement between the arts and the sciences of the last decades in its daily practice.
The Resonances III Festival focuses on Big Data: the challenges of generating, storing, sharing, selling, etc., of large data sets of all kinds. The summer school will take place between June 25-29, 2018 and will be loosely divided into:
[1] A theoretical part in the first two days, 25 and 26 of June
[2] A workshop putting together artists, scientists and policy makers in the last three days, from 27 to 29 of June
Artists will be invited to participate in the workshop with the possibility to attend the theoretical part. The workshop gives the occasion to exchange ideas with scientists. Successful applicants and JRC scientists will exchange ideas with the objective of jointly creating an artistic installation nurtured by science and linked to the theme of Big Data.
Applicants must be artists with a proven capacity to integrate scientific elements into their own artistic practice. A maximum of 30 successful candidates will be invited to participate to the SciArt Workshop during the summer school. Artists selected for the summer school will receive a daily allowance of 94 euros and a reimbursement of travel and stay.
