Opportunity description

The University of Geneva invites PhD students from around the world to apply for the GEM-STONES Summer School ‘Institutional Proliferation and EU External Action’ that will take place at the Global Institute of the University of Geneva in Switzerland on July 2 to July 6, 2018. The GEM-STONES (Globalization, Europe & Multilateralism – Sophistication of the Transnational Order, Networks, and European Strategies) PhD program aims to understand the developing transnational order, and assessing EU’s role within it. PhD applicants presenting their work will discuss how their own research fits within this complex and sophisticated transnational order perspective and contribute to the development of a theoretical framework capturing the evolution of multilateralism within a globalized world. Activities include:

[1] Lecture Sessions:  Five lectures by invited senior academics are foreseen. The speakers have chosen a relevant topic for each session, and the presentations will be followed by a Q&A

[2] PhD Sessions: The papers to be presented will be circulated in advance, and will be discussed both by academics, as well as by the PhD student’s peers. As a result, paper-givers are provided with ample constructive feedback on their research

[3] Debriefing Session: Centered on the participants’ learning experiences acquired during the week, and several instructors from the PhD schools and professors from the University of Geneva will participate in this session

Applicants must:

[1] Be enrolled in a PhD program

[2] Have an academic profile within the following fields of study: EU Studies and other Area Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, International Political Economy, Law, Sociology, Development Studies, Global Studies, Communication Studies, Critical Studies or any other field relevant to the previously mentioned fields

[3] Attend the full week, and participate in all various sessions and activities, except the excursion where attendance is optional

[4] Be fluent in spoken and written English, as it is the PhD summer school’s working language

The summer school will cover accommodation and travel to and from Geneva, as well as lunches and public transportation. Any other incurred costs are at the participants’ own expense.

The University of Geneva is an institution devoted to research, teaching and dialogue, as well as the site of academic creativity and the transmission of knowledge. Since its foundation in 1559, the university has developed ever higher ethical standards and steadily increased in quality and the will to innovation, and today it is one of Europe’s leading universities.
