Opportunity description
The University of Canterbury has announced it's UC emerging leaders' scholarship. It recognizes high academic achievement, as well as leadership potential and involvement in community, culture, and sports activities, among intending first-year students at the University of Canterbury. The scholars will receive financial assistance to a value of $15,000.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be intending to begin their first year of full-time study in an undergraduate degree program at the University.
- Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a University Entrance qualification or equivalent and have studied at secondary level in the year of application.
- The award of a scholarship is subject to the recipient achieving university entrance.
- Applicants must be New Zealand or Australian citizens or holders of New Zealand residence class visas or international students studying at secondary level in New Zealand.
- Applicants may be considered under more than one category, but will not be eligible to hold more than one UC Emerging Leaders’ Scholarship.
- The scholarship is available annually, in five categories as following:
- All-round Excellence.
- Student Leader: Scholarships are available to applicants who were the Head Girl/Boy or Deputy Head Girl/Boy (or who held an equivalent position) in a New Zealand school in the year of application.
- Sports: Scholarships are available to students who achieve outstanding sporting achievement.
Selection Criteria:
- Quality of achievement at NCEA Level 2 or in equivalent university entrance qualifications.
- Evidence of leadership potential.
- Involvement in community, cultural, and sporting activities.
- For candidates in the indicated categories, the following are also considered; Sports, for example, Evidence of achievement in the applicant’s chosen sporting field.
Conditions of Acceptance:
- An offer of a scholarship lapses if it is not formally accepted within one calendar month of the date of the offer.
- Scholarships must be taken up in the year following the year of application.
- Recipients must make an application to Enroll for full-time study at the University by the second Monday in December in the year prior to their first enrollment.
- By accepting the award, recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance and indicate that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.
- Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations
Funding:
- The scholarship provides financial assistance to a value of $6,000. In addition, it provides an opportunity to participate in a UC-sponsored leadership program.
- The scholarship is paid to a recipient in one of two ways, as selected by the recipient:
- A credit, in the year following the year of tenure, to the recipient’s tuition fees account at the University.
- Credits, in the year of tenure, to the recipient’s accommodation fees, account at a hall of residence or student village, recognized by the University in which a student has accepted an offer of a place.
- The scholarship is tenable in the first year of full-time study in an undergraduate degree program at the University.
- The scholarship is tenable for one year.
- The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.
About:
The University established the scholarship in 2002 under the name Canterbury Undergraduate Scholarships. It was renamed in 2003 to reflect recognition of leadership potential in recipients.
