To celebrate the Japanese Research Centre's (JRC) 40th anniversary, the JRC is pleased to announce the JRC Fuwaku Scholarship 2019. There are two JRC Fuwaku Scholarships available. Each Scholarship is valued at £10,000.

Eligible Programmers
- Any full-time MPhil/Ph.D. Student (new admissions and current SOAS MPhil/Ph.D. students) whose thesis topic focusses on any aspect of Japan
- Any full-time Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree programme with a dissertation on a theme connected with Japan.
- Current Masters students enrolled in Year 1 (of a two-year full-time Masters Degree at SOAS) in 2018-19 and entering Year 2 in 2019-20 are also eligible to apply.
- Part-time programmes are not eligible.
Candidate Criteria
- Open to UK/EU and Overseas applicants
- For MPhil/Ph.D. applicants, the research proposal must focus on Japan. Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) should provide evidence of this in the research proposal of their admission application
- For Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree applicants must write their dissertation on a theme connected with Japan. Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) should provide evidence of this in the statement of their admission application. For current Postgraduate Taught, Masters Degree should provide evidence of this in their Scholarship application
- For Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree applicants must take a minimum of 1.0 units (or equivalent e.g 2x 0.5 units) on Japan/Japanese studies. Applicants (new and current) should provide evidence of this in their scholarship application
- Applicants should include in their scholarship application details of their skills in Japanese. While the Japanese language is not essential, it is desirable so it will be helpful if the applicants’ referees comment on their skills in Japanese in the areas of reading, composition, and speaking, if applicable.
- Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) must have an offer of admission to a degree programme at SOAS by the scholarship's deadline.
- Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2019. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible

Candidate Assessment
- MPhil candidates will be assessed on academic merit and the strength of their proposal.
- Ph.D. candidates will be assessed on academic merit, the results of their research during the previous year and proposal.
- Postgraduate Taught Masters degree candidates: academic references, degree results, statement, and other relevant information in your application will be considered to assess the above criteria.
Notification of Results
Successful candidates will be notified by the end of June. If you have not heard from us by the end of June, you should assume your application was unsuccessful.
