Opportunity description
The Shuttleworth Foundation offers fellowships to individuals to implement their innovative idea for social change. They are most interested in exceptional ideas at the intersection between technology, knowledge, and learning, with openness being the key requirement.
The personal investment you have to make in contemplating this fellowship is substantial – you have to really, honestly and purposefully think through what your contribution to positive social change will be and that is tough. However, it could be the first step toward realizing your big vision.
Benefits
- The fellowship grant covers the cost of the Fellow’s time for a year and is guaranteed to the fellow for that year.
- The grant amount varies and is determined by each Fellow’s salary equivalent outside of the fellowship.
- The co-investment project funding is the most unique part of the Fellowship Program, as fellows are rewarded for investing in their own ideas.
Eligibility criteria
- Anyone can become a Shuttleworth Fellow.
- Applicants do not have to have any specific level of education.
- They do not have to have years of experience in the workplace or be an up and coming millennial.
- Applicants can be from any specific geography or nationality.
- They should just be able to communicate fluently in English.
- They do not have to have an organization.
- They do not have to be of any specific gender.
- Applicants need to have a clear sense of how they can contribute to changing the world for the better.
- They should be able to articulate the problem, and their idea should offer a fresh approach to addressing that problem.
- Applicants should be able to motivate why they are the best person to do this, and how this particular fellowship might help them do that.
About the Foundation:
The Shuttleworth Foundation was established in January 2001 by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth as an experiment with the purpose of providing funding for people engaged in social change. While there have been various iterations of the foundation, its structure and how it invests in social innovation, the current model employs a fellowship model where fellows are given funding commensurate with their experience to match a year's salary, allowing them to spend that year developing a particular idea.
