Opportunity description
Earth Science Week 2018 will start in October, and annual photography competition of the Geological Society of London will be launched as well. The twelve winning images will be displayed at the Geological Society’s HQ in Burlington House throughout Earth Science Week – and as often as possible during the ensuing year – as well as featuring in the Society's popular Earth Science Week calendar.
This year’s Earth Science Week theme is ‘Earth Science in our Lives’, highlighting the ways in which geology features in our everyday lives – whether through objects, products and services or locations.
As for this year’s photo competition, The Geological Society of London is interested in images which reflect geology that’s been important in competitors' life. It might be a place they often visit, somewhere they’ve carried out fieldwork, or simply somewhere close to where they live. The theme can be interpreted as broadly as they wish – images might also be inspired by how human activity and geology interact, or the ways in which geology features in our lives through resources, outdoor activities or as inspiration for artists, writers and scientists alike.
Participants need to send in their entries with just a line or two explaining what the subject of the image means to them.
Prizes of the competition:
As well as being displayed at the Geological Society, winning photographs will all feature in the society's 2019 calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes will be awarded:
[1] 1st prize: £100.
[2] 2nd prize: £50.
[3] 3rd prize: £25.
All 12 winners will also receive a collection of geological goodies, including a copy of the calendar, and a year’s free subscription to Geoscientist magazine.
