Opportunity description

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is offering the public health informatics fellowshipprogram (PHIFP) which provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in information science, computer science, and information technology to address current and future informatics needs. While working in CDC programs to enhance our agency’s informatics workforce, fellows help state and local health departments and international public health agencies solve complex public health informatics challenges.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • All doctoral candidates must have a doctoral (PhD, MD, PharmD) degree from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:
  1. Public health, medicine, healthcare, health services research
  2. Computer science, information science, information systems
  3. Statistics
  4. Epidemiology
  5. Public health informatics or related discipline
  • All masterslevel candidates must have a master’s degree from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:
  1. Public health, medicine, healthcare, health services research
  2. Computer science, information science, information systems
  3. Statistics
  4. Epidemiology
  5. Public health informatics or related discipline
  • Documented three years of informatics experience in one of the following fields:
  1. Public health informatics
  2. Health informatics or related field
  3. Information systems
  4. Information science
  5. Computer science
  6. Information technology
  • Documented three years of experience in one of the following areas:
  1. Public health
  2. Related healthcare profession
  • All PHIFP candidates are required to have documented experience conducting research or evaluation activities during or after academic training.
  • Acceptable experience includes publications, thesis writing and defense, poster presentations, and/or a research or evaluation proposal.

Required Documents:

  • Letters of Recommendation:
  1. Three letters of recommendation are required from persons familiar with your academic achievements, aspirations, personal qualities, and professional attributes.
  1. At least, two letters of recommendation must be from persons who are not currently employed at the CDC.
  2. Persons writing letters should typically be current or former supervisors or professors. Avoid requesting letters from colleagues or friends.
  3. Recommendations must be specific to the PHIFP application, written in English, placed on official letterhead, signed and dated within six months prior to date submitted.
  4. Scan and save the letter as a PDF file.
  • Transcripts:
  1. Transcripts must state your degree of study, courses taken, earned grades, and graduation date if the degree has been conferred.
  2. All documents must be in English.
  3. Transcripts and other proof of degree completion will not be returned to you.
  4. Do not send high school transcripts.
  • Personal statement:

Personal statement (in essay form) of 1,000 words or less addressing the following questions:

  1. What are your career plans after graduating from PHIFP? Why?
  2. How will PHIFP help you fulfill these plans?
  3. How will PHIFP complement your previous training and experience?
