The United Nation University’s Institute on Computing and Society (UNU-CS) welcomes recent PhD graduates to join the Young Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) fellowship program in China. Fellows will spend one year in residence to conduct research under the supervision of the principal researchers and the Head of Research. You will be conducting high quality research that can push frontiers, deepen core research understanding, and/or offer new approaches to long-standing developmental issues in the fields of Information, Communication Technologies and Sustainable Development. The goals of the program are to:

  1. Contribute to sustainable development research field
  2. Address global development issues in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  3. Engage academic partners within the UN policy-making process
  4. Increase combined research capacity, global reach, and impact
  5. Keep research abreast of new and emerging scholarship on sustainable development
  6. Foster an interdisciplinary intellectual community


  1. A PhD or equivalent degree completed in a relevant discipline in the last two years
  2. Demonstrated experience conceptualizing and carrying out desk and field research in an area relevant to the ICTD field
  3. Engagement in research relevant to UNU-CS’ research agendas
  4. Excellent command of spoken and written English
  5. Flexibility and the ability to work under deadlines
  6. The capacity for creative solutions and out-of-the-box thinking
  7. A results-driven mindset
  8. Great team player with strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  9. At the end of the fellowship program, the ICTD Fellows are expected to jointly or independently produce research papers and a UN policy relevant outputs


  1. Office space in our newly renovated office building, which is part of Macau’s rich cultural heritage
  2. Free accommodation in UNU-CS’ staff apartment facility in the center of Macau, a 15-minute walk from the office; you will not pay rent but utilities only (continuous residency is required)
  3. Economy travel to and from Macau on the first arrival and final departure
  4. A stipend, competitive with local market rates
  5. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience
