Opportunity description

The annual HG Wells Fiction Short Story Competition invites writers from all ages and backgrounds to participate with their stories for 2019. The theme for this year’s competition is “Time” in its broadest interpretation. There are two categories: The Margaret and Reg Turnill Competition for young writers of 21 years and under, and a senior competition for writers over 21 years.

Competition Rules:

  1. All stories must be in English, and the length is 1,500-5,000 words
  2. Double quotation marks should be used for speech and single quotation marks for other appropriate purposes
  3. Please ensure you do not have your name or address anywhere in your uploaded document: stories will be judged anonymously and including your name or address will invalidate your entry. To be safe, do not even use your own name as a character name
  4. Proof of age and/or student ID may be required for any entry entered in the Under 22 or at the reduced student price. This proof may be requested by email after the close of entries and prior to the publication of a short list
  5. All submissions should be the writer’s original work, and copyright remains with the author
  6. The story may not be published elsewhere
  7. Each page should be numbered, all text 12 point, Verdana (for judging – it’s easier to read), 1.5 lines spacing, single space left after full stops, no indentation for the first paragraph and after each break, but second and subsequent paragraphs must be indented
  8. Titles: center and bold

Judging Criteria:

  1. Accurate use of spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  2. Use of imagination
  3. The originality of thought and interpretation of the theme
  4. Entertaining content that is thought-provoking, intriguing, moving and, above all, enjoyable

Prize:

Winners in the senior category (above 21 years) will receive £1,000, while winners in the junior category (21 years and under) will receive £250. All winners will get free publication in quality, professionally published paperback anthology.
