Opportunity description

ESCWA announces a workshop in the field of using remote sensing to estimate the quantities of groundwater used for irrigation in selected countries in Jordan.

Benefits

This workshop aims to enhance the capabilities of national teams from Tunisia, Oman and Morocco to achieve integrated and sustainable groundwater management by providing practical training on the use of innovative technologies. It also aims to:
  • Presentation and explanation of the guide to using remote sensing to estimate the quantities of groundwater used for irrigation, including the necessary data, opportunities, and various challenges.
  • Guide trainees to apply the above-mentioned guide to the study area and draw conclusions about the study results and inform the groundwater management decision-making team.
  • Enabling national teams to use the Arab platform for knowledge related to groundwater.
  • Adding the outputs of each study to the Arab Knowledge Platform related to groundwater.
  • Funding will include (for sponsored participants) round-trip travel to Amman, a daily subsistence allowance to cover hotel, meals and other expenses, and an allowance to facilitate domestic transportation to and from the airport.
  • Participants will be required to arrange their hotel accommodation, airport pick-up and secure their own visas to travel to Jordan.
  • ESCWA can provide nominated participants with a personal letter of invitation to facilitate the visa application process.
  • The visa cost can be paid upon submitting the original payment receipt to ESCWA.
  • Note: Round-trip tickets will be issued in accordance with the financial rules and regulations of the United Nations.

Eligibility criteria

  • The workshop will bring together nominated representatives from Tunisia, Oman and Morocco from the ministries responsible for groundwater management and agriculture who have basic knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • ESCWA will organize this workshop, which will be held in person during the period from 26 to 27 May 2024.
  • The workshop will start at 9:00 in the morning and will end at 16:00 in the evening on each day of the workshop.
