ArkxSite invites all architecture and landscape architecture students, young architects, and young professionals to an international one-stage architecture ideas competition and to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Retreat located at the ‘Cabo da Roca’, Portugal. The Site Retreat is a powerful place to increase and stimulate the senses, and a space for contemplation, and a landmark within the landscape. This is your chance to get a unique and memorable experience.

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following criteria:

  • The competition is open to all architecture and landscape architecture students, young architects and landscape architects, and young professionals with a degree in architecture studies or landscape architecture studies.
  • When generating a vision for an intervention located within such a remarkable place, it is essential that each design proposal emphasizes, respects, and celebrates the site. 
  • There are no limitations in height, excavation, or extension beyond the cliff edges, however you should care of:
  • Entrance: Provide a space of transition between the natural landscape and the ‘Site Retreat’.
  • Look-out point: Provide a look-out point for visitors to rest and engage with the cliffs, the sky and the sea, offering visitors a unique experience within the immensity of the place; it can be a singular space or a sequence of spaces, open and / or enclosed to the natural elements.
  • Inner Space: The ‘Inner Space’ is a secluded retreat for one individual. Provide a private room to cook, sleep and a restroom, open and / or enclosed to the natural elements.
  • The competition submission will consist of:
  • A single digital panel: (1) A1 sized panel (84,1 cm x 59,4 cm), Landscape / Horizontal layout. 
  • The file type/size is: JPG (RGB Color) is 5 Megabytes (maximum). 
  • Recommended 300 dpi resolution.
  • The JPG file may be compressed to a ZIP file format. 
  • Each team may be composed of 1 up to 4 team members.
  • The team may include multidisciplinary members as long as a member with a degree in architecture studies or landscape architecture studies is part of the team.
  •  It is not mandatory to be a registered architect or landscape architect.  
  • All members of the team must be ≤ 40 years old on the date of the submission deadline. 

Competition Schedule:

  • Regular Registration Period: 80€ + VAT: Aug 2, 2022 – Sep 9, 2022.
  • FAQ answers posted: Aug 26, 2022.
  • Late Registration Period:100€ + VAT: Sep 10, 2022 – Sep 19, 2022.
  • Submission Deadline: Sep 24, 2022.
  • Jury Evaluation: Oct 21, 2022 – Nov 4, 2022.
  • Competition Result: Dec 2, 2022.

 Evaluation criteria:

Your works will be evaluated based on:

  • Originality.
  • Responsiveness of the proposal to the competition's objectives.
  • Appropriateness to the site and its context.
  • Quality and clarity of the presentation.
