Opportunity description

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is seeking a qualified National UN Volunteer to serve as an Associate Political Affairs Officer in Tripoli. Mandated by the Security Council, UNSMIL supports Libyan stakeholders in advancing an inclusive political process aimed at holding national elections and restoring unified institutions. The selected volunteer will provide vital project support to the Mission's facilitation of the governance and economy tracks of the Structured Dialogue. This is a fully funded assignment. There are no application fees. The volunteer will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of USD 1101.5 per month, an entry lump sum of USD 350, a danger and hardship differential of USD 330.44, comprehensive health insurance, and an exit lump sum of USD 120 for each month served. The assignment duration is 4 months with the possibility of extension.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Support senior officers with the organization of the governance and economy tracks of the Structured Dialogue, including preparatory work, logistics, research, coordination, and notetaking.

  • Monitor events relating to political and economic issues in Libya, as well as events related to the political process, and provide timely updates.

  • Assist senior officers with preparing drafts, briefing notes, correspondence, reports, background papers, and talking points.

  • Ensure compliance with UNSMIL administrative requirements, including completion of mandatory trainings.

  • Undertake other administrative and operational tasks as directed by the direct supervisor.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidate must be a national, legal resident, or hold refugee status in Libya.

  • Must be between 18 and 80 years of age.

  • Bachelor's degree in international relations, political science, social science, law, economics, or any other related fields.

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Fluent proficiency in both written and spoken Arabic and English.

  • Strong analytical and writing skills for drafting high-quality reports.

  • Strong IT and digital literacy skills, including proficiency in MS Office.

  • Previous involvement in political dialogue or reconciliation processes in Libya is highly desirable.
