Opportunity description

Writing East Midlands in partnership with the Society of Authors is pleased to announce this year's edition of the Aurora Prize. A national writing competition seeks outstanding new writing in short fiction and poetry. It receives hundreds of entries each year, with the best 25 in each category making it to a published longlist and the best 10 in each category on published shortlists. Just share your best work, and you will have a chance to win many amazing prizes.

Benefits

If you are among the winners, you will have one of the following prizes:
  • The First Prize:
    • A cash prize of £500.
    • Feedback on a piece of work of their choice from a leading literary agent (or Editor as appropriate).
    • A year's free membership to the Society of Authors, which includes access to advice and resources on all aspects of the business of writing.
    • A session with the Society of Authors staff, including an introduction to how the Society can support you in your careers as professional authors and cover essential advice on copyright, payment terms, and contracts. 
  • The second Prize: £150 cash.
  • Third Prize: A ticket to the 2025 Writers’ Conference, hosted by Writing East Midlands.
  • A regional prize of £100 to the best work in each category from the region.

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following criteria:

  • This is a national writing competition, seeking outstanding new writing in short fiction and poetry.
  • It welcomes international entries, but they must be written in English.
  • You can enter a maximum of 5 entries.
  • No alterations can be made to poems or stories once entered.
  • Entries must not have been published before (including self-published, published on a website or broadcast in any way).
  • Entries must be entirely original work, written solely by the submitter.
  • Work must not be produced or edited by Chat GPT or any other AI creation tool.
  • Entrants must be aged 18+.
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • Non-cash prizes are not transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.
  • The Writers’ Conference ticket prize is not transferable for cash value.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the decision.
  • Poems and Short Fiction:
    • Entries can be on any subject.
    • All entries are judged anonymously so the writer’s name must not appear on the work itself or in the file title – any submissions which feature the writer’s name will be disqualified without a refund.
    • All poems must have a title and must not exceed 60 lines (excluding title).
    • All stories must have a title and must not exceed 2000 words (excluding title).
    • Stories should be 2.0 line spaced, 12 point font.
    • Poems and stories must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Fees:
    • The first poem/story submitted costs £9.00 Subsequent entries by the same writer cost £7.00 per poem/story.
    • Payments must be made in £ sterling.
  • Authors of the winning poems or stories, by entering the competition, grant Writing East Midlands the right to publish the work on its website/social media and use it in promotional material thereafter.
  • The copyright of each shortlisted poem or story remains with the author.
