Opportunity description
Swansea University offers fully funded PhD scholarships in the Biosciences field. This studentship aims to investigate parasites and microbiome-stressor relationships and the methane emissions of cattle kept under different pasture management regimes. The candidate will adopt an exciting interdisciplinary approach that combines field research with laboratory work and ecological modeling. As well, a comprehensive training program will be provided by the interdisciplinary supervisory team’s expertise in animal health and disease ecology, molecular physiology and microbiomes, and grazing livestock systems.

- The full cost of UK tuition fees.
- An annual stipend of £18,622 (2023/24 rate).
- Additional research expenses of £16,000 will also be available.

Eligibility criteria
You should follow the following criteria:
- Candidates must have obtained, or be about to obtain, an upper 2.1 degree or master’s degree in a relevant subject (animal ecology, veterinary science or epidemiology, evolutionary, molecular or computational biology) with an emphasis on data analysis and/or existing molecular skills, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK.
- These studentships are only available to applicants who have not previously obtained or about to obtain a PhD degree (or equivalent).
- Project start date: 1 October 2024 (Enrolment open from mid-September).
- Mode of study: Full-time or part-time study is possible.
- This scholarship is open to candidates of any nationality.
- Quantitative/mathematical experience is needed, which can be demonstrated through one or more of the following:
- Undertaking units as part of your degree that have a significant quantitative/mathematical component (maths, statistics, bioinformatics)
- Maths or Physics A-level
- Highlight your quantitative/mathematical background within your application and to upload any supporting evidence.
- You should have:
- A genuine interest in combining field research, laboratory techniques relevant to parasitology and animal health research, and ecological modeling (including time series analysis).
- Strong time and data management and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of good verbal and written communication skills.
- If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum English requirements for the program.
