Opportunity description
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) invites young researchers in computer science and mathematics from all over the world to apply for one of the 200 coveted spots to participate in the 9th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF).
This opportunity is provided exclusively to outstanding young scientists in mathematics and computer science (or closely related fields) at the Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD, and Postdoc levels.
200 young researchers from all academic stages, based at institutions and universities around the globe come together for a week of scientific networking. Within the unique atmosphere of the HLF, participants from diverse disciplines are able to discuss their research and how they approach problems.
Exchanging ideas and learning new perspectives about ongoing or future research projects is a vital element for scientific progression. With many research issues becoming increasingly complex, cultivating reliable networks has become essential for scientists from all backgrounds. Connecting with fellow scientists is therefore pivotal for the future career of a young researcher.
Extensive interaction with the laureates of mathematics and computer science is possible because their participation is not only limited to giving lectures, instead it continues throughout all aspects of the program. Ample time is provided to discuss with these scientific pioneers during breaks, meals, and social events.
At the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, the brightest minds in mathematics and computer science interweave, find inspiration and push forward.
Benefits
Travel Support:
If your application is successful, you should request financial support for your participation in the HLF from your home institutions (university, research lab, company). If that fails, you should apply with a national funding agency in your respective countries. If both applications are rejected, you can apply for financial support from the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF). The travel grant application form is available for download on the online registration tool. The rejection letters have to be included in the travel grant application. Those of you who are not eligible for national funding are requested to specify the reason(s).
Travel Health Insurance:
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum provides all participants with travel health insurance for the duration of the Forum. For this reason, please fill in the respective fields of the online registration form, e. g. date of birth, your official address, and your first and last name (please make sure that the spelling of your name corresponds exactly to the spelling in your passport).
The travel health insurance covers only HLF participants and only for the duration of the Forum. It does NOT apply for any accompanying persons/family members etc.
Eligibility criteria
Students of mathematics and computer science (or closely related fields) at the Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD, and Postdoc levels can apply for the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. Postdocs include young researchers in classical postdoc positions but also those of you who recently completed (within 5 years) your PhD – and are still strongly interested in scientific matters, even if you are now working in a non-scientific environment.
Selection Criteria:
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation is not involved in the selection of the participating students. The 200 young researchers are selected (based on the application material submitted) by international experts who are appointed by the award-granting institutions: The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA), and the International Mathematical Union (IMU). There are two such expert panels, one for mathematics, and one for computer science.
Each successfully completed and submitted application is reviewed by at least three international reviewers who rate the applications. The top 100 in each discipline are invited. The reviewers come from across the globe, so they can accurately evaluate applications from a wide variety of disciplines and institutions.
About HLF:
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) is a networking conference where 200 carefully seleهابيلcted young researchers in mathematics and computer science spend a week interacting with the laureates of the disciplines: recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal and Nevanlinna Prize. Established in 2013, the HLF is annually organized by the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF).
