Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunityto work as a community connector to identify the unique needs of their paired participant and work with them to connect with assets in the community. As, Community Connector Programs aim to connect community-dwelling older adults in need of support with local services, groups, and communities based on identified needs and personal goals.

Duties & responsibilities

As a volunteer in this role, you will:

  • Conduct participant visits and provide support.
  • Visit paired participant(s) within the community to administer non-invasive surveys and questionnaires and follow up accordingly.
  • Engage the participant(s) in conversations that may highlight any challenges or issues in their life.
  • Assist participant(s) in personal goal identification.
  • Link participant(s) with volunteer organizations or community-based organizations, either by phone, email, or through the e-referral platform.
  • Utilize a tablet computer and other technology to provide information to partner organizations and/or record visit information and notes.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of community programs and services and acts as a resource in the community.
  • Assist in accompanying participant(s) to resources/services, as needed.
  • Promote local community events, programs, services, and activities to the participant(s) and encourage their participation.
  • Document and report
    • Report any concerns for the paired participant(s) to the immediate attention of the coordinator.
    • Complete visit logs for documentation and reporting purposes.
    • Record assessment results accurately using a mobile computer tablet.
    • Participate in regular Community Connector meetings to share best practices, troubleshoot, and participate in continued learning.
    • Submit status update reports to the coordinator.
  • Adhere to program and organization policies and procedures:
    • Participate and promote the completion of mandatory program training.
    • Aware of and adhere to policies and procedures related to health, safety, and quality matters to ensure volunteer and participant safety.
    • Ensure all concerns or incidents are promptly and accurately reported to the coordinator.
  • Facilitate community sessions (optional)
    • Organize community-based recreation/informational sessions for participating older adults.
  • Support other Red Cross initiatives, as needed, to provide for a coordinated team effort to meeting the needs of the community.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge about and involved in your community or a desire to become involved or learn more.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Access to a telephone, email, and internet.
  • Considered an asset but not required:
    • Current or previous Canadian Red Cross Instructional training including but not limited to Youth Leader, Respect Education Facilitators, Water Safety Instructor, First Aid Instructor, etc.
    • Experience working with older adults.
    • Fluency in other languages such as French.

Please note:

  • To succeed in this role, all volunteers will be asked to complete a learning path.
  • This training, including First Aid and CPR, will be offered to you free of charge by the CRC.
  • Online and face-to-face training will be available in a fun, interactive way.
  • Minimum volunteer hours /period: 6 months commitment.
  • Time spent engaging in activities will vary by a volunteer’s interest and availability with the minimum requirement being 6 hours per month.
