Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunity in Tunisia, it announces its need for one volunteer to work as a dispatch officer for 12 months with the possibility of extension. This assignment is located in the Transport Unit of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and it is expected to start on 03/09/2023.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Effectively manage UNSMIL TPT Dispatch Operations in Tunis that include assigning drivers, managing Dispatch vehicles, and organizing in-city and out-of-city road trips.
  • Uses electronic data media to prepare and disseminate information regarding Transport Dispatch services and facilities to end-user groups.
  • Facilitates staff movement for duty purposes and ensures that vehicles are pooled to achieve the utmost economy and efficiency at all times.
  • Ensures the constant availability of vehicles for temporary assignment in support of one-off tasks as directed by the Chief Transport Officer.
  • Conducts the initial briefing, in-country orientation, and driver testing of all new Mission personnel, such as International and National civilians.
    Maintains mission driver records and facilitates the production of UN driver’s permits.
    Performs a variety of additional mission-wide ad-hoc tasks as and when required by the CTO.
  • The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring, and formal on-the-job training, when working with national staff or (non-) government counterparts.
  • Committed to effective communication, coordination, and cooperation within interagency organizations.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Technical/vocational diploma: High School Diploma or relevant equivalent.
  • Valid light and heavy-duty driving licenses.
  • A two-year vocational diploma in Auto-Mechanic or Auto-Technician is desirable.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation-related functions including experience working with a large fleet of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Basic Computer skills is required (MS. Word, Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
  • Fluent in the English language.
  • Working knowledge of French and Arabic languages.
  • Good spoken and written communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct presentations, and articulate options, and positions concisely.
  • Effective organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities and ability to work under pressure.
  • Teamwork and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate independently in an austere environment for protracted periods.

Please note: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment and be aged 27 - 80.
