Opportunity description
The AKS invites applicants who aspire to widen and deepen their knowledge of Korea to the AKS Graduate Fellowship for the period from 1st September 2021 to 28th February 2022. It is a non-degree program that invites international graduate students to the AKS and supports them for six months, providing them with the momentum to grow to be the next generation of promising scholars in Korean studies.

- A monthly stipend of KRW750,000.
- An economy-class round trip airfare at the actual expense.
- The on-campus guesthouse is available free of charge.
- Fellowship Period: From 1st Sep 2021 to 28th Feb 2022 (6 months in total).
Eligibility criteria
You must meet the following criteria:
- An applicant should be either a foreign national or a Korean national who has completed education outside of Korea which is compatible with Korea‘s elementary, middle, high school, and college education.
- Be enrolled in a Master’s or a doctoral degree program at an overseas university.
- Applicants completed coursework and are in the status of ABD (All But Dissertation) in a Master's degree program at an overseas university.
- ABD students in a doctoral degree program at an overseas university are NOT eligible for AKS Graduate Fellowship, but eligible for AKS Fellowship run by the AKS’ Center for International Affairs.
- The research topic should pertain to Korea/Korean studies.
- A high level of proficiency in the Korean language is preferred.
- Previous AKS Graduate Fellows are not eligible to apply again.
- Recruitment announcement for 2022 AKS Fellowship will be published in Sep 2021 at intl.aks.ac.kr/english.
Please note: Maximum Number of Fellows Sought is five. It is subject to change depending on the qualifications of applicants.
About the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS):
Academy of Korean Studies is South Korean research and educational institute with the purpose of establishing profound research on Korean culture. It was established on June 22, 1978, by the Ministry of Education & Science Technology. Activities by AKS range from conducting research on Korean culture from both humanities and social science perspectives to educating and training researchers and higher education professionals, translating and publishing Korean classics, and publishing and disseminating research results in the Korean Studies field. Its activity areas also include compiling and distributing major reference works such as the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and the Digital Encyclopedia of Korean Local Culture, digitizing and disseminating academic information in the Korean Studies field, engaging in cooperation and exchange activities with academic institutions in Korea and overseas and conducting programs and projects aimed at improving the international community’s understanding of Korean culture.
