Opportunity description

Film Freeway invites all artists who are passionate about documentary films to attend the Jean Rouch International Festival and a documentary competition on the sidelines of this festival. It is one of the most important documentary film events, in Europe, in the field of social sciences that is held every May in Paris and screens more than 70 documentary films. It endeavors to present films that examine issues in the social sciences and humanities, through both their purpose and approach. Originally intended as an encounter for filmmakers and social sciences researchers, the festival also promotes dialogue with diverse audiences.

  • International Competition:
  • A competitive section for contemporary works with no restrictions on theme, genre, or duration.
  • A Focus on the Living World:
  • A competitive section dedicated to films that explore the relationship between humans and the environment.
  • Shared experiences:
  • A non-competitive section showcasing films based on long-term fieldwork.

  • One or more films will be selected to be distributed through one of the following catalogs: Catalogue National de la BPI, Images de la Culture du CNC, ADAV. 

Please note: The prize money will be paid directly to the filmmakers.

Eligibility criteria

You should meet the following criteria:

  1. Works submitted must have been completed after September 1st, 2020.
  2. Films must be sent in their original language with English and/or French subtitles.
  3. Each filmmaker may enter only one film.
  4. Films submitted for selection in previous years cannot be re-entered.
  5. Films that have already been broadcast on a TV channel or VOD platform (except for festival platforms) will not be considered.
  6. Films selected in competition at Cinéma du Réel (Paris, France) will not be accepted.
  7. A file of the film must be uploaded on the FilmFreeway server.
  8. An Internet private link and access password must also be provided.
  9. The selection results will appear on the website in late March 2022.
  10. No film may be withdrawn from the Festival after notification of its selection by the Committee.
  11. The Festival reserves the right to use short excerpts of the film for the Festival.
  12. The committee will not consider fiction films, broadcast stories, news reports, or magazines.
