The French Institutes for Advanced Study (FIAS) Fellowship Programme offers a unique opportunity for outstanding international researchers to spend ten months at one of seven prestigious research institutes in France, namely:
Aix-Marseille
Cergy
Loire Valley (Orléans–Tours)
Lyon
Montpellier
Nantes
Paris
The program aims to support innovative research projects in a multidisciplinary academic environment, where fellows enjoy the freedom to pursue their research and collaborate with leading French research institutions.
FIAS is a competitive research fellowship program designed to attract excellent researchers from around the world to develop their projects in France. The program is open to scholars from all fields in the social sciences and humanities, as well as related interdisciplinary domains.
Available Fields and Programs
The fellowship covers all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Researchers from other relevant disciplines are also welcome to apply. Applications from eligible artists are also encouraged. It is recommended to visit the websites of the participating institutes to learn about their specific research priorities.

August – November 2025: Double peer review process
December 2025: Notification of preselection results
January – March 2026: Final selection by IAS Scientific Boards
March 2026: Announcement of final results
September/October 2026: Start of the fellowship
Benefits
Fellows will receive a comprehensive benefits package including:
A net monthly stipend of €2,200
Flexible contractual options (employment contract or paid academic leave depending on the applicant’s situation)

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Hold a PhD degree plus at least 2 years of full-time postdoctoral research experience (PhD training period is not counted)
All nationalities are eligible, but applicants must not have resided or worked in France for more than 12 months during the 3 years preceding the deadline
Submit an individual research project (group or multiple project submissions are not accepted)
Fluency in English, as the entire application must be submitted in English
