Ghent University in Belgium is offering a Ph.D. Scholarship for Engineering and Physics Students for 1 year, with another 3 years after positive evaluation. The scholarship will start by 01/09/2021 at the earliest. Within the assignment, you conduct scientific research in the field of power quality, high-frequency power quality, and EMC. The research topic focuses on modeling grid-connected equipment in the frequency range of 2 to 500 kHz, including PV, storage, and EV-chargers. You conduct measurements on the available microgrid, model the grid and grid-connected devices, classify devices and predict the influence of background distortion on high-frequency harmonics.
Tasks:
- You model the grid and classify grid-connected equipment in the frequency range 2 – 500 kHz and higher. In-depth knowledge of transmission lines, measurement techniques, and power electronics is necessary to accomplish this task.
- You model, predict and measure the influence of background distortion on high-frequency harmonics.
- You write scientific publications and contribute to project reporting.
- You supervise bachelor and M.Sc. students during projects and practical courses related to your own research.

Eligibility criteria
The applicant has to fulfill the following criteria:
- You have one of the following Master degrees with specialization:
- Master of Science in Electromechanical Engineering (subject Electrical power engineering), Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or Applied Physics.
- Master of Science in Engineering technology – Electronic Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
- Equivalent Master in Electronics or Electrotechnics.
- You are highly motivated, self-critical, you work with rigor and attention to detail, and you work accurately
- Good knowledge of Matlab, Python, and Latex is an asset.
- You have a strong interest in power quality, EMC, and electronics.
- You combine being an active team player with a strong sense of autonomy and responsibility.
- You have good communication and writing skills and have an excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
