Grants for Projects in Digital Journalism from Google

Google offers grant opportunities for the projects that demonstrate new thinking in the practice of digital journalism. The grants are awarded for the best projects through the GNI Innovation Challenge, which is a global program that empowers news organizations from around the world to innovate in any form. It aim to produce original journalism whose projects focus on innovation towards creating a more sustainable and diverse news ecosystem.

If you get this opportunity, Google will fund:

• up to $150,000 for selected projects. 

Please note:

• Out of the total project budget, Google will finance up to 70% while you must provide the remaining at least 30%. 
• Marketing expenses should not exceed 20% of the total amount of Google funding requested.

You must follow the following criteria:

• Applicants should be based in the Middle East, Turkey & Africa region and have their principal place of business there.
• The Challenge is open to news organizations, established publishers, news startups, publisher consortia and local industry associations as well as freelancers are eligible to apply. 
• News organizations must be incorporated in the Middle East, Turkey & Africa region. 
• All ideas are welcome but the mostly require, all projects to have clear indicators showing the potential impact of the project from a user perspective and/or from a business perspective.
• Selected projects will also need to be delivered within one year.
• The innovative projects should focused on, but not limited to - the areas below:
• Ways to increase reader engagement and/or reader revenue.
• Developing and diversifying business models.
• New methods of distribution.
• Combating misinformation.
• Increasing trust in journalism.
• Reaching new audiences.
• Improving the efficiency of workflows.
• Exploring new technologies.
• Applicants should clearly underline the potential opportunities of the project by providing clear indicators (eg: audience metrics, subscriptions growth or financial expected impact etc…).

Evaluation Process:

Your project will be evaluated against five main criteria:

1. Innovation.
2. Impact on the news ecosystem.
3. Feasibility.
4. Diversity.
5. Inspiration.
