Opportunity description

The Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) scholarship provides financial support to women from developing countries who wish to pursue higher education at accredited universities in the United States, Canada, France, South Africa, and Latin America. The scholarship aims to empower women who are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of women and children in their communities through education, leadership, and sustainable development.

Benefits

If you get one of these opportunities, you will have grants of up to:
  • South Africa: US$7,000
  • The US-Canada program: US$15,000
  • Trinity Washington University program: $7500
Grant funds are disbursed in:
  • May and June for the US-Canada and Trinity Washington University programs.
  • February for the South Africa program.
Please note: Grant amounts may vary, based on exchange rates and availability of funds.

Eligibility criteria

You must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • A self-identifying woman, and at least 25 years old at the time of the application deadline.
  • Be a national of a country listed on the MMEG country eligibility list (except for the Trinity Washington University Program).
  • Be registered (not just accepted) at an accredited in-person academic institution and program when submitting their application.
  • Plan to be enrolled for at least one full academic semester (half-year term) after the award of the MMEG grant.
  • Plan to graduate no later than three years after the award of the MMEG grant.
  • Not be related to a World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund, or Inter-American Development Bank staff member, spouse, retiree, or MMEG Board member.
  • For the South Africa, in addition to the above criteria, you must:
    • already be enrolled full-time or part-time (minimum of 2 courses per semester or term) at one of the universities on this list.
    • be enrolled for at least one academic semester (half year) following the award of the MMEG grant in December (the term between January and July 2026).
    • plan to graduate no later than three years following the award of the MMEG grant.
    • hold a study permit for South Africa if applying from an eligible country other than South Africa.

About Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG):

The Margaret McNamara Education Grants is a nonprofit, public charity founded in 1981, which awards education grants to exceptional women from developing countries, who are at least 25 years old, and enrolled at universities in the US, Canada, and select universities in South Africa and Latin America.

Application Deadlines

Application periods vary by destination:

  • South Africa: From 15 May 2026 to 14 September 2026.
  • United States and Canada: From 15 September 2026 to 15 January 2027.
  • France: From 15 October 2026 to 15 January 2027.
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: From 1 June 2026 to 30 September 2026.
