The Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) is one of the largest art universities in Germany, with approximately 1,000 students enrolled in disciplines such as fine arts, design, performance, art education, visual communication, art history, and media studies. HBK is internationally oriented and has the authority to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. It maintains a strong network of cultural and academic institutions throughout Lower Saxony.
The Braunschweig Projects Curatorial Fellowship is a 12-month program starting on 1 April 2026, designed to support curators in developing and implementing a final exhibition for the Braunschweig Projects program, while also creating an independent curatorial project connected to a museum, archive, or cultural or scientific institution in Lower Saxony.
The fellowship includes:
Designing and realizing the final exhibition concept in collaboration with the selected artist fellows.
Developing an original curatorial project ideally linked to a local institution, with attention to research, budget, communication, and public engagement components.
Opportunities to work closely with the university’s faculty, students, and institutional partners.

The selection will be made by an expert jury and confirmed by the HBK board.
Benefits
A monthly stipend of €1,500 for 12 months.
Free studio apartment in Braunschweig for one person (a €200 monthly utility charge applies).

Mandatory participation in the Welcome Weeks (20–30 April 2026).
The fellow is expected to reside in Braunschweig for at least 8 months during the academic year.
Eligibility criteria
At least three years of experience in curatorial practice.
A clear, well-conceived curatorial project ideally connected to Lower Saxony’s cultural landscape.
Applicants must not be receiving other funding (e.g., salary, fellowship, grants) during the fellowship period.
An academic degree (preferably a Master's or equivalent).
Proficiency in English or German is recommended.
