Opportunity description

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking an Interpreter/Translator to join its team in Baghdad, Iraq. Operating under the Regional Framework for the Arab States, UNODC focuses on combating illicit drugs and international crime. In Iraq, the project "Supporting the Iraqi Authorities in the Fight Against Drug Production and Trafficking" aims to build the capacities of law enforcement actors. The chosen volunteer will facilitate communication within the Programme Office and with external partners, providing expert technical translations. Please note that there are no application fees. Volunteers receive extensive benefits, including a monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of USD 1,724.16, a danger differential of USD 517.24, an entry lump sum, and health insurance.



Duties & responsibilities

  • Interpret from Arabic into English and vice versa during meetings, events, and training workshops conducted with governmental counterparts.

  • Provide accurate and well-structured written translations of official documents, training materials, reports, and correspondence.

  • Facilitate clear communication during technical trainings to enable national partners to fully engage with the content and objectives.

  • Strengthen collaboration with national counterparts by ensuring precise and culturally sensitive interpretation.

  • Ensure linguistic consistency and alignment with UN terminology and standards.

  • Provide timely language support across UNODC activities to help project teams meet tight deadlines.

  • Support the supervisor with additional related tasks as required by the Programme Office.

Eligibility criteria

  • Must be a national, legal resident, or hold refugee status in Iraq.

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional work experience at the national or international level in complex technical translation and interpretation.

  • Fluency in oral and written English and native proficiency in Arabic.

  • A Bachelor's degree in development, criminal justice, humanitarian studies, or translation and interpretation.

  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office applications.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally in a multicultural team and challenging environments.
