Ithra is calling artists from Arab countries for a competition; Ithra Art Prize 2021. This Prize is an annual leading art initiative launched in 2017 by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. In its previous editions, the Art Prize was awarded locally to Saudi and Saudi-based contemporary artists. This 4thedition, and all subsequent awards, the prize will extend its geographical reach to include established contemporary artists that are from or based in one of the 22 Arab countries.

The winner will receive:
- A monetary prize up to 375,000 SAR ($100,000).
- The winning artwork will be displayed at the Ad-Diriyah Biennale in December 2021 and will become part of Ithra’s permanent art collection.
Eligibility criteria
You must follow the following terms:
- Applicants must originate from one of the 22 Arab countries, or be based in one of the 22 Arab countries for a minimum of 10 years.
- Applicants must be over the age of 18.
- Applications are accepted from individual artists as well as collectives.
- The proposal should be of new, original work, exclusive to Ithra.
- Proposals should not be part of an existing series of work (same idea, concept, and methodology).
- The artwork must be sustainable and not ephemeral.
- The work must be able to fit into crates and be transported to and reinstalled at Ithra.
- The project should not exceed SAR 375,000 ($100,000).
- Applicants must include a detailed budget breakdown.
- Applicants must include a production timeline from the point of conceptualizing and research to the delivery of the artwork to the Ad-Diriyah Biennale in Riyadh.
- The proposal must be in line with the size (4 x 2.5m) and weight restrictions (500kg per square meter).
Timeline
- Launch of the open call for submissions: June 16, 2021
- Close of Submission Process: August 16, 2021
- Jury Meeting at Ithra: August 25, 2021
- Announcement of the winner: August 30, 2021
- Artist produces the artwork: from September 1 until November 25, 2021
- Artists sends the work to Riyadh: November 26, 2021
- Unveiling of the artwork at Ad-Diriyah Biennale: December 7, 2021
The Ithra Center:
Ithra is a project pioneering in innovation, culture, and knowledge founded by Saudi Aramco. The ambitious center began work on May 20, 2008. The opening ceremony celebration was attended by His Majesty the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, may he rest in peace, who laid the cornerstone of the project. Ithra opened its doors to the public in 2018. It aims to make a tangible and positive impact on human development by inspiring a passion for knowledge, creativity, and cross-cultural engagement for the future of Saudi Arabia.
