Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers Program is offering a volunteer opportunity as an evidence analyst in Iraq. UNITAD is the investigative team mandated by Security Council Resolution 2379 (2017) to support domestic efforts to hold Da’esh (Da’esh) accountable for its crimes by collecting, preserving, and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity. Genocide committed by ISIS terrorist organization in Iraq. UNITAD is based in Baghdad, Republic of Iraq based on the mandate established by Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) and terms of reference related to the activities of the investigation team in Iraq, as approved by the Security Council on 13 February 2018. The UNITAD team will be involved in collecting a wide range of Documentary, digital, and testimonial evidence, obtained from actors including Iraqi national authorities, other federal governments, victim and witness groups, civil society bodies, and international and regional organizations.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis, including mapping of persons involved, political, military, paramilitary, and other related activities into crimes committed by ISIL/Daesh involving serious violations of international humanitarian law, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, including sexual and gender-based violence.
- Collect, organize, and analyze evidence material on UNITAD's holdings of Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTFs) and produce mapping schemes.
- Provide Member States with field evidence to support national prosecutors, police, or law enforcement agencies in their investigation and prosecution activities.
- Assist in classifying, managing, and transmitting media materials using specialized electronic disclosure and data management tools, in consultation with UNITAD's Information and Evidence Management Officers.
- Undertake computer-related tasks, including entering and managing data into investigative/evidence recording systems.
- Liaise closely with investigators, attorneys, and information and evidence staff to analyze evidence and identify further investigative leads.
- Maintain the security and confidentiality of information by ensuring adherence to security guidelines and implementation of strict procedures with respect to stored materials.
- Understand developments relevant to implementing UNITAD's mandate by monitoring and collecting data and information from multiple sources, including the UNITAD component, UNCT, Iraqi judicial/military/civilian authorities, NGOs, media, and others.
- Perform any other related duties that may be required to support the team.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
- You must be a citizen of any country other than the country of appointment.
- 3 years of experience plus a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in political science, international relations, foreign affairs, criminology, law, or any field related to information systems management and evidence management.
- First-level university degrees or equivalent with any relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
- Three years of professional work experience at a national and/or international level in information analysis, political science, international relations, or any other related program.
- It is preferred that you have work experience in the United Nations or any other international development organization.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- Accuracy and professionalism in producing and editing documents, in addition to drafting and reporting skills.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Experience in evidence management and review systems.
- Experience with database applications like iBase and the i2 Analyst Notebook analytics tool.
- High interpersonal skills; cultural and social sensitivity.
- The ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including civil society, and authorities at various levels.
- Ability to work and adapt professionally in a challenging environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national staff.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
