Eligibility criteria

  • Poets of any nationality who write in English and are 16 years or older can apply for this competition.
  • Your entry must be entirely your own.
  • Participating works must not have been previously published on any website, blog, or online forum or have won any competition.
  • Entries that qualified for the finals in one of the other competitions, but did not win any prize in it, can apply for this competition.
  • Participation in this Contest is permitted concurrently with other Contests but your entry will be disqualified if any of the other Contests are won, published, or scheduled to be published in the future, before the prize delivery date.
  • You must notify the competition immediately if your entry is published or wins a prize elsewhere.
  • Please make sure to read the rules of participation carefully before entering the competition, as your participation means acceptance of all competition rules, and failure to adhere to them may result in the disqualification of your work.
  • All entries will be judged anonymously, so please do not include your name, address, phone number, email, website, or Twitter page in the entry file or the file name.
  • Entries can be on any topic and in any style or form, but it is preferable not to participate with children’s poems.
  • You can participate with any number of poems, but please make sure to submit the correct version of your work before uploading it, as you will not be able to correct errors later.
  • You can withdraw your entry if you find that you have submitted the wrong version or made a mistake and resubmit the corrected version, but you will need to pay an additional fee in that case.
  • Submitted poems must be no longer than 42 lines maximum.
  • The title, dedications, or lines between texts/sections will not count toward the line count.
  • Please add the number of lines at the top right of the first page.
  • Please write your entry on the computer, as the competition will not accept handwritten entries.
  • You can use any type of font provided that it is 12 points in size.
  • If the poem is two pages long, number the pages at the bottom center of the page.
  • Save the file as a Microsoft Word document – .doc or .docx. .rtf, .pdf, or .txt.
  • The size of the sent file must not exceed 2 MB.
  • The file name should be just the title of the poem, written in the same way as in the document, for example, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.
  • Do not put your name in the file title or it will be excluded.
  • The entry fee is £12 per poem.
  • The jury's decision is final and no individual correspondence will be permitted.
  • Copyright in the entry work will remain with the author, but the Bridport Prize will have the right to publish the winning poems selected in various promotional materials.
  • Winners will be notified by email in September, and an awards ceremony for these writers will be held at the Bridport Arts Center on Saturday 19 October 2024.
  • Please check your spam periodically as contest emails may get there.
