Opportunity description

The New Writers Organization announces an online poetry competition for participants from around the world, which will give the winners the chance to win £1,000.

Benefits

  • The first place winner will receive £1,000.
  • The second place winner will receive £300.
  • The third place winner will receive £200.

Eligibility criteria

  • You can submit up to five poems in this competition.
  • The entry fee is £10.00 per poem if submitted individually, but if submitted together, a reduced fee will apply as follows: £18.00 for two entries; £26 for three entries; £34 for four entries; £42 for five entries.
£1.00 from each entry will be donated to First Story (the leading creative writing charity for young people in England).
  • Anyone aged 16 or over (at the time of entry) can enter the poetry competition.
  • Participants from anywhere in the world can apply for the poetry competition.
  • Participated works can be on any topic provided they do not contain any potentially defamatory material or anything subject to copyright.
  • Entries must be written in English and be the participant's original work (plagiarism detection software and artificial intelligence will be used).
  • Entries must be unpublished (including online/social media or personal websites) and must not have received any prizes or won any other competition at the time of entry.
  • Any entries published, scheduled to be published, or that will win a prize must be withdrawn after the time of entry as they will become ineligible to win the New Writers Poetry Contest (entry fees will not be refunded in this case).
  • Poems must be no longer than 42 lines (excluding title and line spacing). Any entries longer than 42 lines will be disqualified and the submission fee will not be refunded (so please double check before submitting your entry).
  • There is no need to write the number of lines on the shared work.
  • Entries must be submitted online using the entry form as attachments in one of the following file formats: Microsoft Word Document or PDF.
  • Postal entries will not be accepted.
  • Your file name should be the title of your poem. Please do not include your name (or any other details about yourself) in the file name or anywhere in the submitted work.
  • Entries must be written in legible font, in 12-point or 14-point font size.
  • You will retain full copyright to any poem you enter but if your entry wins one of the three prizes, you will grant a non-exclusive license to NewWriters.org.uk to publish your work online on its site and in future anthologies.
  • The titles of the poems and names of the poets (or their pseudonyms) will be published on the website for the purposes of announcing the three winning poems.
  • If you would like to use a pseudonym instead of your real name, please add your chosen pseudonym to the appropriate box on the entry form. Please also add your real name in the appropriate box.
  • A limited number of free entries are available to writers from low-income households (under £20,000 per annum) so if you would like to apply for a free entry into the competition (one per person), please email (david@newwriters) .org.uk) before midday (UK time) 15 July 2024 (although your entry can be submitted at any time before the deadline of 31 July 2024). Please use "Low-Income Entry" as the subject of the email.
