Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers Organization is offering an online volunteer opportunity to support counseling services provided by OCHA staff to family members affected by the earthquake. Volunteers must be in good health and have sufficient time to volunteer for 11 to 15 hours for a period of 12 weeks. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is part of the United Nations Secretariat that is responsible for coordinating the work of humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies, and ensuring that there is a framework through which each humanitarian worker can contribute to the overall response effort. OCHA's mission is to coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; defend the rights of those in need; and strengthen preparedness, prevention, and sustainable solutions.

Duties & responsibilities

  • The selected candidates will have the opportunity to provide consultations to a total number of 15 individuals, to improve their psychology and well-being to better support their quality of life and assist aid operations.
  • OCHA is looking for the support of online volunteers to provide psychosocial support to the dependents of the staff members in OCHA.
  • Provide psychosocial support to any family member affected by the earthquake requiring professional support and assistance in resolving personal and/or work-related problem(s).
  • The online volunteers will perform individual assessments in the case of family members experiencing difficulty coping and/or presenting mental-health-related symptoms or syndromes.
  • They will be expected to set aside time for at least 14 counseling sessions per week (7 sessions per volunteer) to support the Staff Welfare Office. Sessions will be 1 hour long.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Required experience in working in the context of providing psychosocial support.
  • Counseling experience and background (especially in natural disasters trauma is an asset).
  • Working knowledge of English.
  • Be Fluent in Arabic.
