Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers Program offers an online volunteer opportunity in the field of data analysis and illustration of motorcycle mobility and its various locations. Tana River County is one of the border counties in Kenya, which has suffered since its independence in 1963 from fragility, instability, social and economic marginalization, and insecurity, in addition to the increase in the frequency of natural disasters such as droughts and floods, which in turn leads to an increase in competition for natural resources between pastoralists and farmers. Here comes the need to reduce and prevent the potential for resource-based conflicts. Local peace institutions, such as Peace Committees, have proven to be useful local peacebuilding tools with good success in areas frequently affected by resource-based conflicts. The role of Peace Committees is wide-ranging covering many angles of peacebuilding such as early warning of conflicts, supervision of peace agreements, documentation of them, and communication with other groups across the country, despite facing many challenges including but not limited to the need to The necessary logistical support, which makes most of these committees dysfunctional, so the Accelerator Lab in Kenya purchased 12 motorcycles and distributed them to 9 community groups of peacebuilding. These bikes are equipped with GPS trackers to collect their navigation and location data with the goal of helping the lab understand in depth their use, how the peace committees move, and address the logistical challenges that impede their various functions.
