Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers Program offers an online volunteer opportunity in the field of emissions data analysis (Ministry of Environment - Lebanon). The Ministry of Environment of Lebanon, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, is committed to protecting the environment in Lebanon and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Its primary mission is to promote sustainable development, environmental resilience, and the well-being of present and future generations through the implementation of effective policies and initiatives. This opportunity aims to analyze emissions data to assess environmental impacts and regulatory compliance. You will collect, process and analyze emissions data from a range of industries in Lebanon, identify trends, deviations and segments of non-compliance with environmental standards, and provide insights and recommendations to reduce emissions.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Compilation of emissions data, including but not limited to carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter (data to be provided by the Ministry).
- Data processing, validation and organization.
- Use statistical and data analysis techniques to evaluate emissions levels, compare them to national and international standards, and identify important trends to deal with this problem.
- Preparing detailed reports explaining the results reached, while providing clear visualizations (graphs and charts) of them.
- Suggest actionable steps to reduce emissions based on your analysis.
- Providing a comprehensive report on the current status of emissions from cement factories in Lebanon.
- Present key findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Document data processing methodologies and analysis techniques used.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Computer and Communications Engineering, Data Science, or other related field.
- Proven knowledge of data analysis and environmental data management.
- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g. R, Python, MATLAB) and database management.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and standards relevant to the cement industry.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Communication skills.
- Fluency in English.
- It is preferable to be fluent in Arabic.
- It is preferable to have knowledge of the basics of the French language.
