Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program announces an online volunteer opportunity in the field of research and database maintenance for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism’s Global Sport Program. This opportunity is part of the Global Program on Security of Major Sporting Events and the Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool for Preventing Extremism (“Global Sport Program”) within the Special Projects and Innovation Branch of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT). You will be responsible for conducting research and compiling information, drafting background papers, and maintaining and promoting the program’s database and knowledge resources.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Assisting in the ongoing management of the digital geo-mapping of practices embedded in the current set of policies, projects and initiatives that aim to leverage sport and its values as a tool for preventing violent extremism, as part of the UNOCT Connect & Learn platform.
  • Continuously researching and compiling background documents on thematic issues and country or regional issues related to sport and e-sports for preventing violent extremism.
  • Drafting notes, background papers, talking points, speeches, minutes of internal and external meetings and correspondence related to the security of major sporting events and/or the use of sport as a tool for preventing violent extremism.
  • Preparing, maintaining and updating internal files and databases.
  • Designing and creating a variety of periodic and special reports, statistical tables, graphic content, work plans, budgets and other materials/notes to facilitate periodic reviews and evaluations.
  • Attending weekly team meetings every week for approximately one hour and taking minutes of these meetings.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Comprehensive computer knowledge, proficiency in working on various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Preferably have professional experience in the field of security or counter-terrorism.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Excellent drafting and reporting skills in English.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national staff.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Fluency in English.
