Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers program offers an online volunteer opportunity in the field of machine learning research to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Advances in digital technology are creating data at unprecedented levels of detail and speed, turning people's life stories into numbers every minute of every day, all over the world, so an important focus of integration work is to complement traditional data (e.g. National statistics) uses new and alternative sources including digital “breadcrumbs”, satellite data and social media to identify emerging trends and gain new perspectives on various development issues.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Design, develop, and test machine learning models for text classification in the field of sustainable development.
- Reviewing, exploring, prototyping, and evaluating data, in addition to writing up the various findings.
- The research is expected to produce a field-level open-source model and a short technical note (up to two pages) on experimental results and model performance.
- The program team will provide ongoing support and advice that you may need at all stages of the project.
- The project will provide you with the flexibility to spend your time at each stage of the project.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Natural Language Processing.
- Preferably, you should have a doctorate.
- Strong mathematical background.
- Proficiency in Python and related deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch (preferred), TensorFlow, and JAX.
- Strong knowledge of state-of-the-art deep learning and natural language processing techniques, including but not limited to BPE coding, contextual representations, (self-)attention, transformers, encoder-decoder architecture, and zero-sum learning.
- Documented research experience or published research work in the field.
- Working knowledge of any other official language of the United Nations.
- Fluency in English.
- Working knowledge of French.
- It is preferable to have a working knowledge of the Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Chinese languages.
