Opportunity description

The WLC Foundation announces its online writing competition entitled “Walking Together.” You can enter this competition with either a short story or a poem of 250 words or less entitled “We Walk Together”. The Foundation will publish selections from the best works of poetry and prose in a collection of illustrated chapbooks, as well as a local audio podcast. Selected works will also be showcased during the Sound Walk in September 2024.

Benefits

  • Winners will be announced on Saturday, September 28th.
  • One winner will be selected in each category, who will receive a remote residency opportunity as well as a prize of €100, an illustration of their artwork designed by Alban Low and a one-year silver membership of the Foundation (worth €50).
  • The second place winner in each category will receive €25.
  • All finalists will receive two copies of the limited edition Illustrated book (to be published in September) and will be invited to attend an exclusive Special Writers Circle event on Saturday, September 28, and to read their work to a live audience online on the same day.
  • Participants will retain copyright to their participating works.

Eligibility criteria

  • The registration fee (to cover administrative costs) is €9 for a story or poem and €15 for two poems (participants can only submit two entries – you can submit a poem and a story, or two poems or two stories). Participation fees will be waived for those who can't pay them.
  • Stories or poems must be fictional and no more than 250 words in length.
  • The decisions of the jury are final.
  • You must be 16 years or older.
  • Participating works must be original to the entrant.
  • Entries must not have been previously published in print or online or have won any awards.
  • Participating works must be original and written in English. It should also be intended for adult or young readers.
  • Please notify the competition if your article wins an award or is published elsewhere so that your entry can be removed from the competition.
  • The authors retain full copyright worldwide.
  • Entries must be written in clear, legible handwriting.
  • Entries will be read and judged anonymously, so do not put your name, address, email, phone number or any personally identifiable information on any page of your work.
  • Entries must be submitted as PDF files only.

About WLC:

The WLC Foundation was officially established in 2021 as a non-governmental organization in Belgium, but began its first activities in 2019. The Foundation supports the publications of artists who love walking, and provides a place for them to share their various works, ideas, and articles.
