Opportunity description

The MSU Museum announces a partially funded residency program in the arts in the USA. This program is designed to foster collaboration, exploration, and innovation in a supportive environment to create new works of art that blend the arts, science, and technology. The Michigan State University Museum is an innovative museum that fosters interdisciplinary research and educational collaboration in the arts and sciences. The Michigan State University Museum serves the Michigan State University community by creating experiences in the arts, sciences, cultures, and technologies.

Benefits

This opportunity will cover:

  • Travel expenses to/from your current location and East Lansing, Michigan.
  • Accommodation costs for up to 4 months in East Lansing, Michigan.
  • Total salary estimated at $20,000 (before taxes).
  • Production costs up to $15,000 for an artwork.
  • Facilitate networking with other artists-in-residence at the University of Michigan.
  • Additional childcare support may be provided if you have children with $1,000 per month.
  • You will have the opportunity to display your work at the Michigan State University Museum.
  • The selected artists will also be part of the STEAMpower Project Fellows program, a year-long collaboration between artists, faculty, and graduate students that focuses on the relationship between the arts and sciences.

Eligibility criteria

  • Fine artists from any background or medium can apply for this opportunity where they will immerse themselves in the FRIB laboratory environment, interact with its scientists, students, and staff, as well as engage with the dynamic and vibrant arts communities of the CoLab and STEAMpower. This residency program fosters a culture of experimentation, innovation, and pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic practices, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary exchange and exploration.
  • The topic of this residency will revolve around nuclear astrophysics, one of the main research directions at FRIB, which aims to understand how the properties of atomic nuclei shape the nature of stars, supernova explosions, and the chemical elements that make up the universe and ultimately allow the formation of planets and the creation of life.
  • This is a unique opportunity for artists with a strong interest in science, technology, interdisciplinary practices, experimentation, innovation, and interaction with diverse communities.
  • This opportunity is specifically aimed at submitting artistic proposals for interactive artworks that explore the broader societal or philosophical context of nuclear astrophysics research at FRIB.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • This opportunity will be available to artists working in any visual artwork, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, digital media, mixed media, and new media.
  • You must adhere to all of the following if you are accepted into this opportunity:
    • Make your residency on an MSU campus for a minimum of 3 and up to 4 months.
    • Completing the artwork resulting from the residency opportunity within one year.
