Opportunity description

The University of Ghent African Platform is offering a partially funded short-term research fellowship opportunity in Belgium. The African platform is one of the six regional platforms of Ghent University, which works to facilitate and enhance academic cooperation between Ghent University and various academic institutions in Africa. The platform hosts five research fellows each year who will spend a minimum of two weeks at Ghent University or one of its associated university colleges.

Benefits

  • The fellowship consists of a research grant of €1,000 plus an airline ticket.
  • The scholarship will cover (or contribute to) travel, accommodation, and living expenses for a minimum of two weeks, meaning that in most cases you will have to find additional funding.
  • Participants will be given office space and access to various facilities (eg library) as visiting scholars at Ghent University.
  • You can apply for the fellowship at any time during 2024.
  • Visiting scholars will give at least one lecture or seminar to fellow researchers and other students and, for this reason, must be fluent in either English or French.

Eligibility criteria

  • The African Platform Fellowships are aimed at postdoctoral researchers (junior or senior lecturers and professors) affiliated with an African institution of higher education or research.
  • There must be a bilateral agreement or memorandum of understanding between Ghent University and the researcher's African institution.
  • You can view an overview of the agreements and memorandums of understanding here.
  • Please contact Annelies.Verdoolaege@UGent.be if you have any questions or concerns.
  • The following criteria will be taken into consideration in the selection procedure:
    • Candidate profile such as CV and academic achievements: 25%
    • Motivation, feasibility, and academic quality of the research plan: 25%
    • Added value/sustainability (research impact on future collaboration between departments and organizations) - (criterion: 50%)
    • New types of collaboration will be given priority, with reference to new initiatives of a new scope - thus priority will be given to candidates who have not had the opportunity to visit UGent over the past 12 months.
    • Interdisciplinary research will be given priority.
  • The selection committee with representatives from the various faculties will review the applications submitted.
  • Fluency in English or French.
  • Ghent University operates a strong policy of diversity and equal opportunities and encourages everyone to apply.
  • The selection committee will also seek to balance:
    • Local institutions (from Africa).
    • Participation of Ghent University Faculties.
    • Senior candidates and junior ones.
    • Diversity in gender.
  • The Africa Platform will assist the winners with practical arrangements such as insurance, visa, and housing in university residences.
  • Ghent University issues a visitor's permit for foreign visitors who are on a short stay (no longer than 90 days) under the supervision of the University. This pass will give participants the opportunity to access the Ghent University sports center and student restaurants.
