Opportunity description

Australian Book Review is accepting entries for 2024 Peter Porter Poetry Prize. Which is open to all international poets from 3 July 2023 until midnight, 9 October 2023. This year the Porter Prize is worth a total of AU$10,000 – with a first prize of $6,000.

Benefits

  2. The other four shortlisted poets will each receive AU$1,000

Eligibility criteria

Who can enter?

  1. Entries are welcome from living poets anywhere in the world.
  2. There is no age limit.
  3. ABR staff and board members are not eligible.
  4. ABR contributors, interns and volunteers may enter.

How to enter:

  1. Multiple entries are permitted.
  2. Entries should preferably be a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx).
  3. PDFs are accepted if necessary for the poem’s format.
  4. Entrants will receive automatic confirmation of receipt.

Format:

  1. Entries must be a single poem of no more than 70 lines, written in English.
  2. Font: Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 12 pt, black.
  3. The pages should be numbered.
  4. Stanza breaks must be clearly indicated.
  5. The author’s name must not appear anywhere in the document or in the name of the digital file.
  6. The file name should only include the title of the poem.

What does it cost to enter a poem?

  1. Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of AU$30, or AU$20 for current ABR subscribers. To qualify for the lower entry fee, entrants must hold a current print or digital subscription.
  2. If you don’t already have a digital subscription to ABR, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single poem for a total of AU$100. You can then enter subsequent poems at the discounted rate of $20 each.
  3. If you don’t already subscribe to ABR’s print edition, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single poem for the following rates: $120 (Australia), $200 (New Zealand/Asia), or $220 (ROW).
  4. If you choose not to subscribe to ABR (print or online) when you enter the Prize and you are not already an ABR subscriber, you will receive digital access to ABR free of charge for four months. Your complimentary digital ABR subscription will be processed automatically, and you will receive an email with more information after submitting your prize entry.
