Opportunity description
Simio is inviting students all over the world to participate in the Student Simulation Competition for the year 2022. This is open to both graduate and undergraduate student teams. In addition to the fame and glory as well as "bragging rights" and exposing your work to potential employers there will be cash prizes totaling $5500, twice a year, for the top 4 teams.
Competition Theme:-
- The May 2022 version of the competition focuses on an offshore transportation logistics problem.
- Simio Supply Logistics (SSL) is an organization that charters offshore vessels to and from various offshore drilling locations. The system is presently under scrutiny due to high costs, unmet demand, and excessive standby time. Management at SSL would like your team to improve vessel scheduling and determine a better way to meet the drilling company’s demands while minimizing incurred costs.
- SSL is requesting an analysis of the current vessel operations. Using the historical data collected by the data management team, model the current system’s performance and fulfillment of cargo demand.
- The team will need to consider the specifications of different vessel types and capacity limitation for cargo as they plan which vessel is loaded and dispatched. Additionally, the North Sea, in which the rigs are located, can prove to be complex for sea-faring ships trying to pass through its waters.
- Factors such as wave height and general weather conditions greatly impact each vessel’s ability to transport its cargo from port to rig, and once at the rig, unload its contents. Modeling the current system will provide a baseline for evaluating improvement strategies for the future.
- Management requests that your team develops and evaluates alternative business and procedure strategies. New strategies should decrease the overall operating cost while improving productivity and uptime.
Benefits
- Cash prizes will include:
- First Place - $2500.
- Second Place - $1500.
- Third Place - $1000.
- Fourth Place - $500.
- Honorable mentions and other non-cash awards may also be presented. In addition to the cash awards, winners receive personal, faculty, and school award certificates and are announced on the Simio website, newsletter, and by other means.
- Students have the option of including their contact information to encourage networking and job offers.
Eligibility criteria
- Teams are given approximately ten calendar weeks (less at the discretion of instructors) to develop a Simio solution for a case study which is provided by Simio. This case study will be a realistic problem drawn from actual user projects.
- Teams are comprised of one to four students. If any team members are graduates, the team size is limited to 2 students. Only students currently enrolled at a college/university are eligible.
- A faculty advisor is expected to distribute and explain the project and rules and submit the best entries from their school. There is no limit to the number of teams that can register, however each faculty advisor can submit a maximum of three projects to the global competition. Faculty with more than 3 potential entries are encouraged to hold a local preliminary competition with at most the top 3 finalists submitted to the global competition.
- Faculty advisors planning to offer the case in their classes must complete the registration form on simio.com/academics/student-competition/. The project case description will be sent to the faculty advisor upon completion of the registration.
- The contest is held twice yearly: Once in February – early May with judging in late May and once in September – early December with judging in late December.
- Solutions are submitted online and include a written Executive Summary, an optional Explanatory Appendix, and two videos described below. All presentations must be in English.
- Provide a Team Introduction video (maximum 2 minutes) to introduce the college/university and project team members. This will not be shared with judges, but will be used in introductions.
- Provide a Project Presentation video (maximum 10 minutes) to clearly explain your solution. You may use slides and video recordings from the model but should not include university logos, templates, or other identifying materials of the university/college or team members.
