Opportunity description

CGS announces the 6th John Ruskin Competition for Artists, Designers, and Makers from around the world, which will give winners the chance to win £3,000. The John Ruskin Competition targets a wide range of artists and creative makers in the fields of glasswork, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, textiles, animation, digital arts, installation, and mixed works. Up to 40 artists will be selected to display their work in an exhibition taking place at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London from 1-18 February 2024.

Benefits

Five winners will be selected by the jury to receive the following prizes:

  1. First prize: £3,000
  2. Second prize: 2,000 pounds sterling
  3. The Alan Davidson Prize for Entrants Under 26: £1,000.
  4. International Prize: £1,000.
  5. Kate Mason Innovation Prize 2024: £1,000.
  6. The John Ruskin Prize is opening its doors to international entries for the first time in order to allow artists, designers, and makers working outside the UK to enter and receive a special prize of £1,000. Submissions in this category must be digital, as the judging process will be conducted digitally, eliminating the need to ship physical artwork for presentation.

Eligibility criteria

  • Artists, designers, and makers, both amateur and professional, of all nationalities, aged 18 or over can apply for the International Prize.
  • Note: International orders will not need to be shipped to the fair.
  • Works are accepted from a variety of media, including but not limited to the following:
    • Animation, presented in movie format.
    • Ceramics.
    • Collage in all its forms, including photography.
    • Mixed works using traditional media and digital elements.
    • Digital artwork.
    • Graphics of all shapes.
    • Glassworks in all its forms, such as colored or etched glass.
    • Metal artifacts, including gold, silver, and heavy metal artifacts.
    • Paintings of all kinds and shapes.
    • Photography
    • Printing, including engraving, printing, and writing in all media.
    • Sculpture.
    • Textiles and weaving.
    • Various typography and fonts.
  • Dimensions:
    • Two-dimensional work must not exceed 2.4 meters in any dimension.
    • Tapestry fixtures such as wall hangings may use room height (4.5m)
    • For 3D works, the maximum height should be: 8 feet (2.4 meters)
    • The length of the movie/video should not exceed 10 minutes. You will be asked to send a copy in MP4 and MOV format of your movie/video if selected.
  • Up to three digital images may be submitted for each artwork. Images must be less than 5MB in size, and the recommended file types are JPEG, PNG, and TIFF.
  • The submitted forms must be accompanied by the payment of the registration fee online within the application form.
  • An email will be sent to inform participants that they have received their entry when it has been successfully submitted.
  • Entrants under the age of 26 will be required to present a valid photo ID showing their date of birth if they qualify for the competition.
  • The submission fee is determined according to the number of participating artworks, as follows:
  1. Standard Entry: 1 artwork entry: £25; Two artworks: £40; Participation with 3 artworks: £50.
  2. Entry fee for entrants under the age of 26: One artwork entry: £20; Two artworks: £25; Participation with 3 artworks: £38.
  3. For entrants from outside the UK (International Entry): Entry with one artwork; £15, 2 Art Submission: £20; Participation with 3 artworks: £30.

The Foundation's team consists of a group of enthusiasts who are passionate about glass and the artists working with it.
