Opportunity description

Brick Lane Library announces its short story competition, which will give the winners the chance to win £1,000. This competition targets participants' original short novels, ranging in length from 1,000 to 5,000 words.

Benefits

  • The first place winner will receive £1,000.
  • The second place winner will receive £500.
  • The third place winner will receive £250.
  • The three winners will receive a skills development meeting with a member of the Spread the Word team, a year's membership to the London Writers Network, as well as four free places for workshops and training courses.
  • Short story publisher Scratch Books will also provide insightful feedback to the top three authors, and the longlisted winning entry will be published in the London magazine.

Eligibility criteria

  • The registration fee for this competition is £10 per entry.
  • Competition fees cover the costs of the competition, the costs of producing the selected works, and paying the salaries of readers and judges.
  • 50 free entries will be provided to low-income writers, which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This number may increase as the contest receives paid entries once entries open.
  • If you are a low-income writer, please email enquiries@bricklanebookshop.org to check if you can enter the contest for free. For example, from a household earning less than £16,000 a year, or receiving tax credits, disability allowance or career's allowance. Please use "Low-income entry" as your subject heading and include your full name and email address. The contest will not ask for any information or proof of your financial status, but please keep in mind that these places are limited and designed to allow writers for whom entry fees are prohibitive to participate in the contest.
  • Shared file specifications:
    • Save your entry as a PDF file.
    • Use the title of your story, followed by the word count as the file name, for example: Bookshops are Great 1978
    • Entries are judged anonymously, so your name should not be present anywhere in the document. If it does (including the footer, header or file name), your entry will be automatically disqualified; You will not be notified or refunded in this case, so please double check before uploading your entry.
  • Please use the following in your entry:
    • Size – 12 points
    • Use black color
    • Line spacing - double
    • The number of entries must be between 1,000 and 5,000 words (not including the title).
  • Participants must be over 18 years of age by entry deadline: 5 p.m., April 7, 2024.
  • Entries received after the deadline of 5pm, April 7, 2024 will not be accepted.
  • Participants must be currently resident in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.
  • Stories must be written in English.
  • Written stories should be aimed at adults.
  • Entries must be an independent, original work of fiction by the entrant.
  • Excerpts from novels, non-fiction, children's or young adult novels, essays, memoirs, graphic novels, or poetry will not be accepted.
  • You won't be able to make any edits or changes to your entry after you submit it, so please double-check your work before submitting it.
  • You can participate with more than one work, but you will have to pay the participation fee for each work, which is £10.
  • Black and white illustrations are permitted if they are essential to the story and the copyright is owned by the entrant, or the entrant has permission to use the image. However, please keep in mind that if your story is shortlisted and published, it will be in the book in A format (110 x 178mm), and will be printed in black and white on paper designed for text, not high-resolution images.
  • The short story entered in this competition must be unpublished and not intended for publication in print or online. Please notify the competition immediately if this changes by emailing enquiries@bricklanebookshop.org.
  • The participant may have self-published an entire book of his own work, or published any previous academic work, as long as the sales of his book are less than 50 copies.
  • The submitted work must be an original work by the entrant.
  • Works translated into English can be accepted, and the financial prize will be shared between the writer and the translator.
  • Stories generated or partially generated by artificial intelligence will not be accepted.
  • The jury's decisions are final and non-negotiable.
  • Copyright to longlisted stories remains with the author, but Brick Lane Library will have the right to publish them online and in print.
  • Longlisted and shortlisted writers will be notified via email.
  • Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted individually, so please subscribe to the competition newsletter when submitting your entry to receive the latest news about the prize.
