Opportunity description

The Wilbur and Niso Smith Foundation announces the New Voices online book competition, which supports new writers to develop an idea that they haven't yet put down on paper, or those who are in the early stages of their work in progress. The award will provide much-needed guidance to aspiring authors and will encourage entries from all writers, including those from underrepresented backgrounds who have a new story to tell.

Eligibility criteria

  • Writers should provide the opening three chapters totaling no more than 10,000 words and a complete plot outline of no more than 1,000 words detailing where they imagine the story will go.
  • Winners will be announced in fall 2024.
  • The New Voices Prize will be sponsored and supported by Bonnier Books UK, publisher of Wilbur Smith's vast trove of adventure novels including 2023's long-awaited historical epics Nemesis and Covenant.
  • Writers of any nationality who write in English can apply for this competition.
  • The writer must not be represented by a literary agent.
  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • The writer must not have had their novel published by a recognized commercial publisher or signed a contract to publish their novel in the future.
  • The work must be intended for adult readers.
  • Children's novels or novels aimed only at adults will not be accepted.
  • The writer must notify the competition if he submits his work in other competitions and wins in it. If the competition deems that there is a conflict of interest, the writer may be asked to withdraw his or her participating work.
  • Entries must be submitted digitally as a .doc or .docx file in double-spaced 12 font.
  • There must be no reference to the author's name or personal details in the submitted work.
  • The Competition has the right to disqualify any entry if it has reasonable reasons to believe that the participant has violated any of the Competition rules.
  • The Competition will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to your personal data.
  • Please contact the competition via the following email: charlotte@wilbur-niso-smithfoundation.org if you have any questions or inquiries.
