Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunity in South Sudan and announces its need for the efforts of one volunteer to work as an environmental engineer starting from 01/09/2023 for a period of 10 months with the possibility of extension.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Design and implement environmental controls for solid waste and wastewater management to ensure efficient environmental risk management.
  • Design and implement the mission’s environmental engineering plan in accordance with UNMISS SOPs and applicable HQ guidance.
  • Run hydraulic models such as HEC-RAS to assess drainage and flooding.
  • Design pump or lift stations and associated pipelines for sewage or stormwater.
  • Contribute to the planning of environmental engineering projects for field offices in solid and wastewater management.
  • Review drawings for constructability and completeness.
  • Participates in carrying out pilot projects or tests to produce innovative solutions to situations unique to field locations, particularly for solid waste management.
  • Supports in administrative tasks to support the achievement of projects and operations of EEU.
  • Carrying out any other tasks required to support the Engineering Section as directed by the Head of the Environmental Engineering Unit.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Successfully support the Engineering Section in complying with the industry standards in the construction and delivery of engineering-related services.
  • Contributed to capacity building of national staff and other local personnel working for the Mission.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with a focus on environmental engineering and/or water resources concentration, Solid Waste Management, Water Resource Engineering, and/or related areas of study.
  • 3 years of experience in environmental engineering or civil engineering.
  • Experience in simultaneous management of relevant projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Fluent in the English Language.
  • Communication skills and commitment to continuous learning.
  • Planning and organizing skills.
  • Teamwork and respect for diversity.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and self-reliance.
  • Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (excel, word, PowerPoint).
  • Affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to prioritize tasks, and handle confidential and sensitive material with discretion.
  • Driving license for Manual 4x4 vehicle.

Please note: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment and be aged 27 - 80.
