The United Nations Volunteers Program is offering a volunteer opportunity as a communications officer in Qatar. This program aims to reach the public, donors, media and other stakeholders with accurate, attractive and timely information through traditional and innovative platforms to:
- Enhance the influence and credibility of the World Health Organization as the leading voice on public health.
- Highlighting the health needs across the region through different humanitarian stories.
- Report health risks and dispel misinformation.
- Strengthen partnerships with the media and other key stakeholders.
- Attracting resources to the organization's strategic priorities.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for each of the following, within your delegated authority and under the supervision of the WHO representative in Qatar or appointed authorized representative(s):
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications action plan for the WHO country office in Qatar.
- Coordination with the Regional Strategic Communications Team for Health in WHO/EMRO.
- Drafting meeting reports, concept notes, and opening remarks for events organized by the country office.
- Identify topics of interest and contribute to the conceptualization and development of content for communication materials such as letters, success stories from the field, media releases, advocacy materials and institutional communication.
- Develop regular newsletters, internal talking points, web stories/messages, and updates when needed.
- Supporting WHO country office projects, and showing the humanitarian face of the organization, including profiles of WHO staff and health care.
- Facilitate the production and dissemination of WHO country office communications materials including but not limited to audiovisual, print, multimedia presentations, media releases, etc.
- Facilitate the establishment and maintenance of contacts, with relevant communications vendors including videographers/photographers, graphic designers, multimedia producers, social media professionals, etc.
- Establish and maintain a network of contacts with media organizations to ensure the dissemination of information on WHO's regular activities and emergency response.
- Highlight the humanitarian work of the World Health Organization through television, radio and press broadcasts; Support for broadcasting.
- Media and journalists and facilitate their access to relevant information when needed.
- Develop content, monitor and update WCO websites and social media accounts (such as Facebook and Twitter) accordingly.
- Maintain and update a database of images and multimedia content for the WCO.
- Health emergency topics covering affected populations, health status, and WHO health response.
- Acting as a counterpart and collaborator for the WHO Regional Strategic Communications Program/Network/Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
- Facilitate the development of regional Emergency Communications, Communications for Health (C4H) and others.
- Liaise with communications counterparts at the Ministry of Public Health and other partners in Qatar.
- Provide support in conducting communication capacity building workshops for the World Customs Organization, the Ministry of Public Health and other partners.
- Perform any other duties as directed by the Head of Office in support of the technical and operational activities of the Country Office.
- Close collaboration with team members and relevant units.
- Manage communications related to procured services and contracts, follow up on the implementation process and report on progress.
- Coordinate and collaborate with all relevant counterparts in the Ministry of Health, UN agencies and other partners.
- Identify, create and handle networking opportunities.
- You should allocate a portion of your work time to some of the following suggested activities:
- Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant UN Volunteers programs.
- Actively participate in United Nations Volunteers program activities (eg in events celebrating International Volunteer Day).
- Learn about and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteering in the host country.
- Contribute articles/writes on field experiences to UNV publications/websites, newsletters and press releases.
- Assist with the UNV Friends Program for newly arrived UNVs.
- Promote or advise local groups in using the online volunteering platform, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to do so.
- Use the UNV Online Volunteer Service whenever technically possible.
- Establishing, raising awareness and promoting the vision of the World Health Organization in a gradual manner.
- Timely delivery of required work to media and communication materials as detailed in the task description.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- You must be between 35 and 80 years old.
- You must be a national of any country other than the country of appointment.
- 15 years of experience in health communications, scientific journalism, organizing support campaigns and media relations. Proven experience in developing content for traditional/social media and in producing communications materials and products.
- Preferably experience working with WHO/UN or an international NGO. Experience in facilitating and holding training workshops.
You must have the following skills:
- Ability to produce attractive communication materials in both English and Arabic.
- Excellent presentation skills with a proven ability to write in both English and Arabic in a clear and concise manner.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to conceptualize different ideas.
- Ability to work under pressure while achieving results.
- Knowledge or sound understanding of health communications and familiarity with other relevant communications.
- Ability to "think outside the box" and make innovative proposals to expand communication.
- Tact, discretion and diplomacy.
It is preferred that you have the following additional skills:
- Proficiency in working on Microsoft Office programs (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Visual design skills.
- Ability to use social media and post on the Internet.
- Practical skills needed to take photos and videos for use on social media.
You must be fluent in the following languages:
- Arabic.
- English.
You must possess the level of education required for this opportunity:
- Master's degree or equivalent in public health or any of the health-related fields with training courses in communications, journalism, marketing, social sciences, or other related fields.
Preferably:
- Training courses or certifications in related fields such as report writing, health communications, emergency communications, social media, media relations, etc.
