UNV offers a volunteer opportunity as a Construction Engineer Associate in Yemen.
Duties & responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Construction Specialist, you will be responsible for each of the following:
- Preparing the annual construction work plan.
- Assist in developing the annual work plan for construction activities. Setting priorities/objectives, performance measures, and monitoring the progress of work to ensure results are achieved in accordance with the stipulated schedule and performance standards.
- Assist in preparing and collecting the information required for the annual work plan.
- Cooperating with the UNICEF program and coordinating with government counterparts.
- Provide technical support regarding construction project management to program/operations departments. Provide information to the program on construction-related activities for inclusion in their annual work plan.
- Provide assistance to Program/Operations departments by participating in construction project proposals.
- Attending technical cooperation meetings. Prepare presentations (PPT) on the progress of projects; Take follow-up actions regarding project implementation and monitoring.
- Provide program/operations departments with information on project progress; Take appropriate measures to overcome technical obstacles and prepare reports on project progress.
- Preparing designs and technical documents.
- Formulate the scope of construction work based on program/operations requirements, budget, and site constraints; Determine the output and method of payment.
- Providing assistance with the examination of construction-related technical documents (design drawings, technical specifications, and bills of quantities); checking whether they are clear, complete, and compatible with programmatic and construction needs, environmental efficiencies, and accessibility requirements; Taking the required procedures for the approval of these technical documents by the relevant ministries.
- Purchase support.
- Assist the supply department in preparing LPA requests and CRC reports with supporting documentation related to construction activities.
- Preparing tender documents for construction works and engineering services. Attending the bidders' conference and presenting the technical components of the tender; Draft answers to technical questions asked by bidders during the tender.
- Follow up construction projects.
- Participate in the inaugural meeting of the construction work with the contracting company, engineering company, and relevant government counterparts.
- Provide close monitoring of construction activities through regular site visits and regular technical meetings including joint monitoring with relevant government technical services; Follow up on progress and review site supervision reports to ensure work complies with rules, standards, and schedule.
- Use effective monitoring and supervision tools to ensure ease of assessment of work quality, progress, and performance of engineering and contracting firms throughout the project duration.
- Provide assistance to the UNICEF Contracts Manager on contract management, amendments, variations, extensions, etc.; Compile and archive project documents, minutes, correspondence, instructions, etc.
- Promote volunteering by engaging with local communities in the context of your work such as devoting part of your work time to some of the following suggested activities:
- Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant UNV and external publications and actively participating in UNV activities (such as events celebrating International Volunteer Day).
- Learn about traditional and/or local forms of volunteering in the host country.
- Contribute articles/writings on field experiences and present them as publications/articles on UNV websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
- Help with the UNV Friends Program.
- Promote or advise local groups in the use of the Online Volunteering Platform, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering Service whenever technically feasible.
Eligibility criteria
You must possess:
- You must be between 18 and 26 years old.
- You must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.
- You must have completed high school, as well as an undergraduate course in civil engineering/architecture, or any other relevant field for the job.
- Motivation to contribute to achieving peace, development, and serving others.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team.
- Flexibility and openness to learning and obtaining new experiences.
- The ability to adapt to different cultures, environments, and other living conditions.
- It is strongly preferred that you have previous volunteer experience and/or work experience with any of the other cultures.
- Computer skills (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, etc.).
- It is preferred that the Arabic language be your mother tongue.
- It is preferred that you be fluent in English.
