Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers program offers a volunteer opportunity as a laboratory technician in South Sudan.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Collect specimens from patients for testing for hematology, parasitology, bacteriology, immunology, serology, sputum, and other body fluids and perform routine and other tests that laboratory facilities can accommodate.
- Collection of swabs for Ag/rtPCR (COVID-19) tests for testing and transport of samples as needed (such as in Ebola virus disease outbreaks, etc.).
- Assisting the medical team in tracing contacts of infectious diseases.
- Daily management of the laboratory including proper keeping of patient records in the data management system.
- Verify high-quality and reliable clinical test results for patients and issue them to medical officers.
- Defining quality control mechanisms, designing laboratory units, and a work plan that ensures safety and proper management of hazardous waste.
- Maintaining records and ensuring complete confidentiality of patient records.
- Monitor laboratory inventory and prepare requests for laboratory reagents and required consumables in cooperation with the pharmacy unit.
- Contribute insights on various infection control measures in hospitals.
- Perform a variety of procedures using established laboratory techniques on manual and automated laboratory equipment.
- Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of laboratory equipment, as well as report any equipment malfunction and initiate repairs, when necessary, by a qualified repair technician.
- Act in a professional manner that reflects the organization's mission, philosophy, and values.
- Train, assist, and supervise the daily activities of the Laboratory Assistant (if applicable) assigned to the Medical Department.
- Perform any other duties that may be required by the Chief Medical Officer, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, or Medical Officer.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
- You must be a citizen of any country other than the country of appointment.
- 5 years of experience in clinical laboratory science in a tropical country.
- It is preferable to have work experience in United Nations missions or any other international agency.
- Computer skills, especially MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and other IT applications and office technology equipment.
- Interest in the fields of humanitarian relief and post-conflict situations.
- Sound security awareness.
- Driving license for cars with manual transmission.
- Good level of English.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in medical technology (clinical laboratory science).
- High degree of personal initiative and willingness to accept broad responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently under established procedures.
- Ability to work by organizational rules and regulations.
- Effective planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage a high volume of work in an efficient and timely manner.
- Ability to set priorities, plan, coordinate, and follow up on work.
- Ability to work under pressure, under tight deadlines, and handle multiple simultaneous projects/activities.
- Teamwork skills and respect for diversity.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and harmonious working relationships in a multicultural environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to live and work in dangerous and remote places, which involve physical hardship and little rest.
- Ability to withstand extensive travel within the mission area.
