UNV offers a volunteer opportunity as a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Officer (MHPSS) in Iraq. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a key member of the United Nations since 1945 and active in Iraq since 1976, is dedicated to helping the country stabilize and reform. The program seeks to transform Iraq into a resilient and strong country by addressing various social, economic, environmental and political challenges, in line with the government’s vision. The program's primary objectives are to support institutions and provide comprehensive services that take into account gender equality and focus on vulnerable population groups. It also aims to achieve five main results:
- Improving the legal and strategic framework to combat corruption.
- Strengthening the justice sector’s capabilities to deal with corruption cases.
- Supporting legislation and institutions in resolving commercial disputes.
- Mobilizing parliamentary support to combat corruption.
- Promoting transparency and public responsibility.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for all of the following:
- Evaluation and planning:
- Conduct gender-sensitive assessments to identify the mental health and psychosocial needs of displaced people and returnees within Jeddah and target communities.
- Develop and implement mental health and psychosocial support initiatives in accordance with international standards and best practices.
- Support the process of integrating mental health and psychosocial support into livelihood and social cohesion program.
- Develop annual work plans for mental health and psychosocial support initiatives within the social cohesion pillar of the United Nations Development Program.
- Program implementation:
- Providing direct psychosocial support services to target groups of displaced people and returnees to enhance their reintegration process and support the values of social cohesion and tolerance.
- Support the daily, timely and effective implementation of mental health and psychosocial support interventions by UNDP implementing partners.
- Facilitate group sessions and workshops to raise awareness about mental health and psychosocial topics within target communities.
- Deliver capacity-building trainings and activities in mental health and psychosocial support to relevant local and national stakeholders, including local peace committees, government staff, UNDP staff, implementing partners, youth volunteer social workers and women in targeted communities.
- Monitoring and reporting:
- Coordinate with the monitoring and evaluation specialist in the field of social cohesion to monitor and evaluate mental health and psychosocial support interventions.
- Support the development and implementation of pre- and post-interventions and their impact evaluation, including drafting data collection tools and disseminating their analysis.
- Conduct frequent field missions to monitor the implementation of mental health and psychosocial support interventions and prepare field monitoring reports.
- Preparing reports for relevant stakeholders, including donors, government and others.
- Preparing progress reports aimed at achieving specific results.
- Preparing Arabic and English translations of technical documents.
- Providing quality and timely progress reports by implementing partners according to agreed templates and timelines.
- Coordination and cooperation:
- Strengthen partnerships with relevant local and national stakeholders, including national and local authorities and community actors.
- Participate in coordination meetings and contribute to interagency efforts.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
- You must be a citizen or legal resident of the country of opportunity.
- 3 years of experience implementing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) initiatives.
- Experience in providing support in the areas of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to IDPs and returnees.
- Strong verbal and written skills.
- Excellent drafting and reporting skills in English and Arabic.
- High personal skills.
- Ability to work comprehensively and collaboratively with a diverse range of partners, including community members, faith-based and youth organizations and authorities at different levels.
- Familiarity with communication tools and methods for development.
- Self-motivated to work, and ability to work with minimal supervision and to tight deadlines.
- Fluency in English.
- Fluency in Arabic.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in psychology or any related field.

- You will be responsible for arranging your own accommodation and other living essentials.
- This opportunity will be located in Baghdad at the UNDP office.
- All national volunteers are entitled to a monthly living allowance of US$2,027. This allowance is intended to cover the basic cost-of-living needs of national UN Volunteers and their families in order to maintain a basic, fit and safe lifestyle.
