Opportunity description

ESC announces a volunteer opportunity as a primate keeper in Spain. You will work 8 hours a day for 4 days a week.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  1. Main management and welfare activities for the group of primates that the organization houses, such as:
  2. Cleaning of facilities.
  3. Creation and administration of diets.
  4. Environmental enrichment activities.
  5. Support in the research department: the participant will learn how to collect behavioral data from the organization's groups of primates. At the same time, you can be part of a study that is being carried out, as well as an assistant or reinforcement in administrative tasks of the department.
  6. Maintenance tasks like gardening, painting, construction...etc.
  7. Support in the communication department: you will help with administrative tasks, dissemination on networks, and other communication tasks.
  8. Learning Spanish (for foreign participants): through the platform provided by the European Commission OLS
  9. Contribute and take part in the environmental project.
  10. Meet other young volunteers and share experiences.
  11. Get involved in activities related to animal welfare.

Eligibility criteria

  • You must like animals and be fascinated by primates.
  • You must have a medium to a high level of English.
  • You must like to work in a team but at the same time be able to work autonomously.
  • Please keep in mind that working with primates is physically hard.
  • You must have the ability to deal with adverse weather, very hot summers, very cold winters, and many insects.
  • You must be a physically and mentally healthy person and have no problem working weekends and holidays.
  • You must be a committed and serious person with work.

Benefits:

  • The grant will cover roundtrip tickets at the beginning and end of the voluntary activity.
  • You will have pocket money determined by the European commission.
  • In the case of volunteers in Spain, each participant receives 150 euros per month for diet and local transport.
  • The participant receives 190 euros per month for food and transportation expenses to the workplace.
  • Accommodation is provided by MONA, at that time it rents 2 apartments in Girona city with single rooms for ESC volunteers.
  • You will learn another language and meet another culture.
