Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers program offers a volunteer opportunity in South Sudan as a staff advisor. This opportunity will be located in the Bentiu Field Office, Staff Counseling Unit, Health Services Division. You will provide confidential counseling services and psychosocial support to mission staff.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Act as a clinical consultant for employees who need psychological help.
- Providing stress management services following serious accidents or other traumatic events.
- Conduct psychosocial assessments and make recommendations to your manager.
- Ensure that all staff receive required counseling services, including travel to field offices/team sites in South Sudan where UNMISS staff are deployed.
- Coordinate clinical activities with civilian and military staff advisors, unit clinical points of contact and civilian/military/police/staff field offices.
- Providing conflict resolution sessions when needed.
- Compile and/or develop information resources that can be made available to employees including online training materials, presentations, self-help materials, and other available local service information.
- Liaise with other UN agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) under the umbrella of the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) in the country regarding various clinical and training activities.
- Follow up on the implementation of stress management programs by collecting data including compiling and analyzing daily clinical statistics.
- Reporting to the Principal Extension Unit on all activities.
- Any other relevant task assigned to you by the Head of the Counseling Unit.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- Be between 27 and 80 years old.
- Be a citizen of any country other than the country of appointment.
- 5 years of experience providing clinical services including counselling, stress and trauma management, etc.
- At least two years of experience working in an international and multicultural environment.
- It is preferable to have experience working in the United Nations or any other international agency.
- Proficiency in writing and speaking skills in English.
- Strong computer skills, including full proficiency in working on various MS Office programs (Excel, Word, etc.), other IT applications and office technology equipment.
- Interest in the field of humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, and volunteer work as a mechanism for permanent development.
- Sound security awareness.
- Experience in crisis and emergency response.
- Driving license for cars with manual transmission.
- Good knowledge of English.
- Master's degree or equivalent in clinical psychology, psychiatry, counseling, or social work.
- Integrity and professionalism in work.
- High degree of personal initiative and willingness to accept broad responsibilities.
- Ability to take charge and work independently under established procedures.
- Ability to work in accordance with organizational rules and regulations.
- Effective planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage a high volume of work in an efficient and timely manner.
- Ability to set priorities, plan, coordinate and follow up on work.
- Ability to work under pressure, with overlapping deadlines, and handle multiple simultaneous projects/activities.

- Flexibility and willingness to live and work in dangerous and remote locations, involving physical hardship and little rest, including the possibility of extensive travel within the mission area.

- Living conditions vary between mission duty stations. Each mission duty station has basic housing facilities, which include running water and electricity. Candidates should be aware that accommodation may be harsh with potential for water shortages and power outages.
- All UNMISS duty stations, with the exception of Entebbe, Uganda, are non-family duty stations. The security level of UNMISS duty stations is rated by the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) who will provide a media briefing upon your arrival. There are a number of locations in South Sudan that are vulnerable to conflict. Primary health care services (preventive and curative) are provided in 11 UN-owned level 1 clinics, 21 contingent-owned level 1 clinics, and 4 contingent-owned level 2 medical facilities within the mission area and territory.
